SCB Steelers Wrap-Up; Steelers Pound Ravens 43-23

by Steeldad

Here are my thoughts as the Steelers and Ravens played last night.

-Congrats to Ben Roethlisberger who became the first QB in NFL history to throw for 12 touchdowns in two games.

-Poor ball skills by Brice McCain on the Ravens’ opening touchdown. Looks like he should have had safety help but he still should have been able to knock that ball away.

-Steelers seemed to be giving the Ravens’ pass rush almost too much credit. Make them beat you first then adjust.

-Steelers offense totally out of sync in the first quarter.

-I tweeted early in the day that I thought James Harrison would make a couple of big plays so thanks to him for proving me right with that first quarter sack.

-Three straight sacks were a combination of a poor blitz adjustment by Ben and two Ravens just simply wanting it more than the blockers for the Steelers did.

-All three penalties on the same play by Baltimore were legit.

-Beautiful throw and catch by Ben and Bell for the tying touchdown.

-I continue to believe that Dick LeBeau has decided he just needs to bring the heat and live with the consequences with this group. The Jason Worilds interception was evidence of that.

-Great protection by the line and great recognition by Big Ben to find Martavis Bryant on the second score.

-Mark it down, Harrison went out with 3:07 left. And he’s back… And making plays.

-Beautiful throw to Markus Wheaton down the sideline for Roethlisberger’s 3rd TD pass.

-What an improvisation act by Brad Wing! Two-points to Matt Spaeth.

-As I tweeted at halftime, it was incredibly sad that NBC chose not to air the jersey retirement of Mean Joe Greene. This man was not just another great player. He was the reason the Steelers are what they are today. As @feelcyr said, you can bet they’ll show Peyton Manning’s retirement ceremony.

-Poor opening drive by the Steelers to start the second half. Total lack of aggression leads to punt.

-Challenge by Mike Tomlin was one of his few good ones. Took away opportunity for Ravens to go for it on 4th and 3.

-Excellent job by the officials to settle things down in third quarter following personal fouls by the Ravens. Easily could have thrown some guys out of the game.

-Ramon Foster has struggled on and off throughout the season and it continued against the Ravens. He was beaten several times by at least three different players.

-You cannot teach the things that Antonio Brown does on the football field. A sensational catch and run for touchdown.

-Hey, kickoff team, how about getting off of the blocks? Every guy on that kick coverage team was looking for another guy to make a play.

-Not sure why coaches continue to challenge spots. Replay officials aren’t going to make their counterparts on the field look bad very often.

-What a difference Martavis Bryant has made on this offense. Five touchdowns in three games. Giving Big Ben the huge target he’s wanted for a long time.

-Roethlisberger has 11 TD passes in two games. That ties Tom Flores and Tom Brady for the record.

-Martavis Bryant became the first player since former Steelers tight end Eric Green to catch five touchdowns in his first three games.

-Ben just can’t do that. You have to get the snap above all else and even if it sin’t your fault you still take the blame.

-What a night for both Brett Keisel and James Harrison. Harrison’s numbers will be more impressive but Keisel played very well too.

-Love the fourth and two call by Todd Haley.
