SCB Steelers Training Camp Tidbits Day Twelve

by Steeldad

Welcome to the new Steel City Blitz Steelers Training Camp Tidbits presented by Taps N’At! This is a brand new feature this year and every single day from now until the end of Camp you’ll see tidbits right here. Our goal is simple; provide you with everything we are seeing, hearing and learning from St. Vincent College in Latrobe. This will be an abbreviated piece as the Steelers practice later than usual today.

If you’re going….

Steelers Practice for Sunday: 2:55pm Eastern

Latrobe Weather for Sunday: 88 degrees and sunny! Humid too! Bring that sweat towel!

Latest on the Injury Front… Bud Dupree’s strong Training Camp has come to a grinding halt with a visit to concussion protocol. No word on Antonio Brown’s visit to Pittsburgh for his quad injury.

It should probably come as no surprise that James Washington is having a great camp. I mean, the Steelers draft wide receivers better than anyone right? I had Washington as a second rounder in the NFL Draft and the reason he wasn’t higher was simply his lack of height. So far, everything we at SCB saw on tape is what we’re seeing in Camp. A guy that wins nearly every contested ball, uses his strength to separate and looks to be the deep threat the Steelers need.

Washington isn’t the only receiver having a good camp. In recent days, Trey Griffey has made some excellent plays while getting a shot with the first team and Damoun Patterson continues to have a great camp as well. One of the best ‘problems’ a coach can have is when there is literally ‘too much talent’ to choose from.

Don’t get too excited about… The Steelers first depth chart. There are going to be massive changes over time and the release of it is more of a function of ‘something the team has to do so here it is’… Also, when you see a guy is working with the first team don’t always assume that means he’s taken someone else’s job. Mike Tomlin has reiterated many times that it’s all about ‘getting looks.’ If a guy is excelling against third team players then they want to see if he can do the same against second and third team guys as well.

One guy that is flying way under the radar (and is one of Cnic’s favorites) is linebacker Matt Galambos. He’s having a super Camp but he’s going to have to prove he can be a special teams’ monster in order to make the roster but he is pushing very hard from behind those other inside linebackers.

I don’t understand… How people claim a guy is having a “great camp” after he makes a big play despite the fact they’ve commented on dozens of bad plays by the guy just before is beyond me. Perhaps speaking in superlatives is a good way to avoid this.

The backup quarterback situation is going about like we figured it would. Landry Jones is not doing anything flashy, but he’s consistent and doing nothing to make people say he shouldn’t be the backup. Josh Dobbs sees the writing on the wall and he’s elevated his play at numerous times. Mason Rudolph has looked like a rookie QB at this point. What the Offensive Coordinator Randy Fichtner and Mike Tomlin need to see is game action and that comes this Thursday.

Going to be a hot one at Camp today. Head over to Taps N’At right after for a cold beverage!! They are less than five minutes away and you won’t be sorry!
