SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Who’s He Screaming At?” Edition

Happy Hump Day Steelers’ Fans!

I cannot remember an instance where a coach yelling garnered so much attention. Newsflash! Coaches yell and scream even at the professional level. The problem with Steelers’ Offensive Coordinator Todd Haley’s screaming fit is that it shouldn’t be an issue at all. OK, so he dropped a few F-bombs on TV but hey, who hasn’t?? The bigger issue was about just who it was that he was screaming at during the crucial two-point conversion fiasco. I don’t care what anyone says, he was yelling at Ben Roethlisberger. Big Ben even said as much! So why…. Did it come out yesterday that Haley was targeting his tirade at Receivers’ Coach Richard Mann? Or wait… Was it Le’Veon Bell? Nope. Some claim Special Teams’ Coach Danny Smith was his target. This whole thing is stupid and I’ve spent enough time on it. Moving along….

Roethlisberger mentioned his disdain for Thursday night games on his radio show this week. He is one of many players to voice his concerns over it especially in light of the NFL’s “player safety” initiative. Recent studies have shown there is very little evidence that players get injured more on Thursday than they do on Sunday or Monday and I totally understand that. But that isn’t the issue for these guys. Their bodies just don’t have time to recover from the previous Sunday. I go back to the book written by Jerome Bettis. In it, he discusses how on Monday mornings he would struggle to just get down the stairs in his home every week. That’s just not good on a number of levels. As a football fan, I don’t need NFL football on Thursday nights. It used to be a night for the college game and I wish it would go back to that.

We took to the airways last night for the Steel City Blitz Podcast presented by 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh. We discussed the Colts’ game, the offensive woes and looked ahead to the Titans. I had to label this edition “explicit.” Thanks Todd Haley!!

Tweet of the Day… JuJu being JuJu.

Injury news courtesy steelers.com… Vance McDonald (knee), Joe Haden (fibula) and Martavis Bryant (illness) did not practice. Full practice participants were Ramon Foster, William Gay, Darrius Heyward-Bey and Ben Roethlisberger. They received the “veterans’ day off” on Monday.

There are number of explanations regarding the deep throw problems of Big Ben. I don’t really think it’s that difficult to see if you understand where quarterbacks derive their strength. Having a strong arm is a big part of it but leg drive and hip drive are crucial to being able to throw a consistently good ‘bomb’ if you will. I don’t see the leg drive right now with Ben. I’m not certain what that’s a product of but I believe that’s exactly where the issue is.

With a couple of big plays on Sunday I’m hopeful that this is just the beginning for Martavis Bryant. This offense could finally take off if he gets going.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
