SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Where to Even Begin” Edition

Good Day to you Steelers’ Fans.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have serious problems as I detailed yesterday following the game. This goes beyond the field too and I honestly don’t know where to begin because I don’t see these going away anytime soon. Antonio Brown stormed out of the locker room before the media even came in. Brown also had a dust-up with Offensive Coordinator Randy Fichtner on the sidelines. There is absolutely nothing different about this secondary other than Mike Mitchell isn’t in it. Still poor communication, still poor tackling and still horrible coverage skills. Keith Butler constantly looks like he has just been teleported to a world he’s never seen before when the camera pans to him. The only thing that will cure this team’s ills is winning. And even then I don’t know that it’s enough.

The Steelers clearly need to address social media use. Someone on Twitter asked Bud Dupree where he was all day and Dupree responded with a Direct Message that was inappropriate. I get it, it’s tough having to turn the other cheek all the time but Dupree just can’t do this.

When healthy, Vance McDonald is a bigger receiving threat than Jesse James. The problem is that McDonald is rarely healthy. James may not be on par with other starting tight ends in terms of blocking but it’s time we start talking about him as the Steelers’ number option there. We can base this on his durability alone.

Tweet of the Day… Couldn’t agree more with Trai’s emoji.

What do Artie Burns, Cam Heyward, T.J. Watt, Terrell Edmunds and Bud Dupree have to do with each other? All were former first round picks and all started on defense yesterday. This unit surrendered 42 points.

It’s time we stop waiting for Mike Tomlin’s clock management to improve because if it hasn’t by now it never will. The lack of urgency was one thing, but the decision to kickoff rather than try to onsides kick was based on nothing. The defense hadn’t stopped the Chiefs all day. Why did he suddenly think this would be different?

Could we just one game please try and knock a tight end off balance at the line of scrimmage? It is within the rules ya know?

The Steelers do not fire coaches during the season and that won’t happen here. What could happen however is that roles can change. Don’t be surprised if Tomlin or Tom Bradley gets more involved with calling the defenses.

Let’s also give credit where it is due. Andy Reid did an excellent job of creating mismatches and finding holes for his receivers yesterday. Not that it was hard, but still…

The Steelers now wait until Monday night to play the Bucs in Tampa. Four weeks ago we thought this would be an easy win with Jameis Winston being suspended. All Ryan Fitzpatrick has done is torch the Saints and defending champion Eagles in back-to-back weeks. Better get things fixed and pronto.

As statistically well as Ben Roethlisberger played well yesterday there were still a couple of negatives. He was bailed out twice. Once by a defensive holding call that negated a strip sack and touchdown and then a red zone INT was (rightfully) overturned because of pass interference. His deep ball was not accurate at all either often landing out of bounds and many of his red zone throws were high. To a degree I’m nitpicking a bit but he has to start practicing on Wednesdays again to find his accuracy on some of these throws.
