SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “When a Vote Isn’t a Vote” Edition

Good Day Steelers’ Fans and TGIF!

So the National Football League Owners decided to institute new rules pertaining to the National Anthem. The problem as we now know is that there was no actual vote on this measure. Understand how rare this is… Any sort of major issue that impacts all 32 teams almost ALWAYS goes to a vote of the owners. No such vote took place. Owners for the Jets, 49ers and Raiders did not agree with the new rules and Steelers’ President Art Rooney II believes the rules have not been defined enough to make a clear distinction between what violates it and what doesn’t. This is a microcosm of the NFL under Roger Goodell. Nothing is ever concrete. Everything that comes out of that office continues to be steaming pile of crap.

I suspect the new rules pertaining to the kickoff will create bigger returns. Kicking teams are no longer allowed to get running starts and eight of the 11 return men must be up further and wedges are no longer allowed as well. This will create less violent collisions. The evidence is rock solid; too many concussions were happening under the old system and changes were needed. The kickoff is an important part of the game and getting rid of it is not an option in my opinion.

Stephon Tuitt revealed this week what many of us were told during the 2017 season; he was playing injured. Tuitt admitted that an upper arm injury limited him a great deal and that’s partly to blame for his sub-par season. I credit Tuitt with playing hurt but with his contract, that’s only going to go so far with fans. Much will still be expected in 2018.

Tweet of the Day… I don’t disagree with this tweet but there are some significant differences between the games before, during and after that are too significant to cause drastic change.

I suspect that whatever the Steelers choose to do it will be as a team. They cannot have the division, or the image of it as it appeared last season, moving forward. It will be all or none.

If Antonio Brown’s workout videos don’t inspire you I don’t know what would.

Probably the best thing I’ve heard coming from the Steelers’ first set of OTAs was about the secondary. New Coach Tom Bradley is already putting huge emphasis on communication, tackling and just good fundamentals overall. No disrespect to Carnell Lake, but this was desperately needed.

I say this every year at this point but I’ll never stop saying it either… This is Memorial Day Weekend where many, not all, will have an extra day off. I have no doubt that yours truly will put away some hot dogs or brats or burgers and some adult beverages this weekend like you will too. But please take a moment to remember why we have this day. At a time when things are incredibly divided, please pay your respects to those who have fought and died in service to our country. I’m extremely lucky to live in a place where I can sit down and fire off my opinions on a daily basis. Those men and women paid the ultimate price for such freedoms and do not take that for granted. Enjoy the weekend but also reflect on what it’s about too.

Have a great weekend Steeler Nation!
