SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Way Overblown” Edition

Ben Roethlisberger

Good Tuesday to You Steelers’ Fans!

I really should not have to address this again today but here I am. Yesterday I pointed out the drama that has been created as much by social media as by Ben Roethlisberger himself. This all surrounds his comments regarding the Steelers’ choice of Mason Rudolph in the third round. Robert Klemko of MMQB.com wrote a piece yesterday stating that Roethlisberger should take Rudolph under his wing as Tommy Maddox did for him. OK, two things here… First, Maddox was out for the season and had nothing else to do but be on the sidelines each week. He was not threat to the rookie QB and there was no competition. We do not know how much Maddox “mentored” Roethlisberger outside of gameday although Big Ben did say he appreciated the time Maddox spent with him that season. Secondly, you have to understand that the national media overall does not like Roethlisberger. This dates back to 2010 and the alleged incidents he was involved in but it also stems from the fact that Roethlisberger has a very good memory. He knows not only the Pittsburgh Media folks who wrote some pretty nasty stuff about him but he knows the national guys as well.

The very bottom line here is that this entire situation has been way overblown. Let’s get to Training Camp and into the preseason before we cast any judgments on anyone.

I’m really pleased to tell you that former NFL Quarterback Jim Everett will join us on the Steel City Blitz Podcast presented by 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh tomorrow night. He’s going to give his perspective on this whole “Quarterback-Mentoring” issue. He played 12 seasons for the Rams, Saints and Chargers so I think he’s got some pretty good experience.

Tweet of the Day… It didn’t turn out like we wanted but Coach T and Big Ben were at Game Six last night.

Congrats to the Penguins on an amazing run of success. Two straight Cups and another solid run this year. These men have to be exhausted. They’ve had little time over the last three seasons to rest. That makes this run all the more incredible.

Wanna know who is having a great and hard-working offseason? Antonio Brown. He’s a must-follow on Instagram. He’s clearly enjoying his life but he works his tail off too. No fan could ever be disappointed in his preparation for each season.

Bold Prediction: If Vance McDonald stays relatively healthy and plays 14 of 16 games this season I believe he will go to the Pro Bowl. That’s how much Big Ben likes him and how much the Steelers in general like what he can do.

When I had the great fortune of getting Ian to join us here at SCB he asked me if he could still write about some of his passions outside of the Steelers and I was more than happy to oblige him. Case in point: he has already started his series on BattleBots. If you’re into the genre and into the TV show then his stuff is a must-read. He’ll also be profiling American Ninja Warrior and the World Cup as well.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!

I like Ian’s pieces, it’s funny because battle bots and ninja warriors are also favorites of mine. I also believe this is how it works with rookies. Veterans will have no problem helping out a rookie but they have to earn that attention first. Pretty simple but that’s how it is.
