SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Pro Day Reality” Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers’ Fans!

In case you missed it, here’s the latest Steel City Blitz Podcast presented by 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh. Ben, Cnic and I discussed the signings of Jon Bostic and Morgan Burnett and Cnic filled us in on his trip to South Carolina’s Pro Day.

Speaking of Pro Days… Like everything you hear this time of year, you have to take Pro Day performances with a grain of salt. Take Sam Darnold of USC for instance. His Pro Day was yesterday and based on what I saw and what I’ve read, he had a very successful day. My question is, why wouldn’t he? Everything that Darnold did was scripted. He’s more than likely practiced every step and every throw 100’s of times. Furthermore, there isn’t a pass rush nor is their any defense on the receiver. This does not mean you can’t collect solid information on him because if he isn’t accurate in this situation then he may well struggle when the real thing happens. Teams use the Pro Days as another way to evaluate but they also use them as another opportunity to speak one-on-one with the players. The bottom line here is that you have to have some perspective. Just because a QB doesn’t throw one incomplete pass the whole day means little in the grand scheme of things.

Here’s Cnic’s latest Draft Player Profile. It’s on Safety Ronnie Harrison of Alabama.

Tweet of the Day… This is true of stars in every league. Shouldn’t be that way but it is.

The Pitt Panthers held their Pro Day this week and there was one interested scout named Ryan Shazier. The Steelers have made it very clear that Shazier is going to be part of their organization whether he every puts on a helmet again or not. He was learning about what to look for and just how to scout players in general. I don’t know how you can’t love the way the Steelers have embraced Shazier since his injury. I expect nothing less but still, very cool to see this.

A day after I suggested that the Steelers could take a defensive lineman in the first round I see the Post-Gazette’s Ray Fittapaldo is thinking the same way. His latest mock has us taking Da’Ron Payne of Alabama. While I’m not guaranteeing it I can see it happening.

Maurkice Pouncey took someone to task on Instagram recently about Le’Veon Bell. It wasn’t so much Bell as it was the issue that many fans do not understand what “contract re-structuring” actually is. Pouncey did an excellent job of explaining it and illustrated just how uninformed the person was. Bottom line? It doesn’t mean a player gets more or less money, it means how the money is distributed changes.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
