SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Priming the Primers” Edition

Good Fourth of July Eve Steelers’ Fans!

With Training Camp looming on the horizon, I want you to know what you can expect from the crew here at SCB. Starting July 12th, we’ll be putting out our previews of each position on the Steelers’ roster. That will take us right up to the 24th where our ‘Training Camp Primer’ will give you everything you need to know about attending Camp in Latrobe. From where to eat to where to park and the best places to get autographs, we’ll have you covered. We realize that you will probably feel over-saturated with content from all of the the different Steelers’ sites out there and I can understand that. We’ve always prided ourselves on doing things a bit differently and we hope continue to appreciate that about us.

Pennsylvania native Gene Steratore is one of several NFL Referees that have called it quits this year. The post-gazette has a nice piece on him if you’re interested. I do not think this higher-than-normal amount of departures is just a coincidence though. There are two main reasons this is happening. First, is that these guys know they can make more money with a hell of a lot less pressure doing television analysis. Second is that I truly believe that they are tired of being second-guessed by Instant Replay. Most of you know I’m not a fan of it in its’ current form and part of that is my belief is that officials are constantly undermined by it. Steratore will be an analyst for CBS this fall.

Tweet of the Day… Interesting take from VWill.

I’m not sure I 100% know how I feel about these “NBA Super Teams.” Personally, I miss the days of the classic NFL dynasties of the Steelers, Cowboys, Niners etc. Why? Because when they lost it was a big deal. It was big for the team that won and big for the team that lost. As for free agents forming these teams, it’s their choice. Can’t argue with that.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN says that Ben Roethlisberger will “balance” his final few weeks before Camp with rest and training. I think a lot of times fans want to compare Big Ben with other older quarterbacks. This is fairly natural thing to do. What one must keep in mind however is that these guys are all very different. What I mean is, Tom Brady has a different injury history as does Drew Brees and Philip Rivers. Each guy has to prepare for a season in their own way and a Roethlisberger put it, “listen to his body.”

If you’re headed to Camp this Summer, please stop by Taps N’At for a cold brew and great food!

Have a great day Steeler Nation and be careful with those fireworks!
