SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters” The “Morning After” Browns’ Edition

by Steeldad

Good Morning Steelers’ Fans! For the first time in over a month we can walk into work or school with a hop in our step following the Steelers’ win over Cleveland.

The Steelers’ defense entered the game with 13 sacks on the season. They recorded eight on Sunday. The defense sacked Cody Kessler four times and Josh McCown four times and was relentless from start to finish. Credit Keith Butler for bringing some zone pressure that had the Browns’ offensive line confused. If you noticed, they focused squarely on the side opposite all-pro tackle Joe Thomas but even he had some trouble during the day. At one point, I think I counted Ryan Shazier coming on the blitz five straight plays in the fourth quarter.

Speaking of the defense, I don’t remember the last time the Steelers brought the wood the way they did Sunday. From Stephon Tuitt to Mike Mitchell to Lawrence Timmons, I saw some of the biggest and best hits I’ve seen in a long time by this unit.

Artie Burns continues to get better and better. He’s going to make mistakes people – he’s a rookie- but I’ve seen some real improvement from this kid already.

Congratulations to James Harrison who became the Steelers’ all-time sack leader passing former Steelers’ great Jason Gildon. It’s a well-earned honor for Harrison who obviously works as hard as anyone.

With the short week, Mike Tomlin will hold his weekly press conference today at Noon. You can see it live on steelers.com.

Chris Boswell survived a nightmarish day for kickers around the league. He made good on all three of his field goal attempts and his one PAT. League-wide, kickers missed a total of 11 PATs.

Tweet of the Day… AB and the new sack king!

I hope we all realize just how close this game could have been if not for what transpired at the end of the first half. Mike Tomlin continued to stay aggressive and it eventually paid off on the second untimed down but that could have been disastrous. The Steelers were dangerously close to going in at halftime up just 6-0.

The two personal fouls against Cleveland QBs (one by Timmmons and the other by Daniel McCullers) were both ridiculous in my opinion.

I don’t get a chance to toot my own horn very often but I thought the Steelers would look heavily upon Le’Veon Bell and it paid off. The offensive line finally looked like a unit that was dictating the play rather than reacting to it.

Those struggles were a reflection of the issues the offense had inside the red zone all day. I’m going to look at the film today but from what I could gather, the Browns were dropping six and seven guys into zone coverage. Ben Roethlisberger struggled to find open guys and wasn’t helped by a Ladarius Green drop as well. It goes without saying but the offense needs to score touchdowns in the red zone.

The AFC North couldn’t be setting up any easier for the Steelers. The Bengals have now dropped to 3-6-1 and have lost Giovanni Bernard for the season and A.J. Green likely for several weeks. Not winning this division would be a travesty.

Nail the number‘ is already out for this week with the Steelers playing on Thursday night. The pot is up to $2,000!

Have a great (and short) week Steeler Nation!

If it’s 3rd and 8, do you feel confident with this defense?? And when will this change??? Then we will be closer to a championship.
