SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Love Me Tender” Edition

Welcome to Tuesday Steelers’ Fans! Let’s Go!

‘Tis the season for the word “tender” to get a lot of play and the Steelers used it last evening. They gave placekicker Chris Boswell a second round tender for $2.9 million. As a restricted free agent, Boswell can entertain offers from other teams. Should he choose to sign with said team and the Steelers don’t match, they would receive a second round pick in return. That amount is actually pretty inexpensive for an all-pro kicker because there are guys equal to or lesser than Boswell making significantly more money. Obviously both the Steelers and Boswell would like to reach a long-term agreement but that may be on hold for another year but it gets a little more risky. Boswell would be an unrestricted free agent and would be free to sign anywhere for any amount.

The Steelers also placed an original round tender on outside backer Anthony Chickillo who is also a restricted free agent. Eli Rogers however did not receive a tender. His late-season ACL injury is likely the biggest reason for this decision. It is certainly a gamble but the Steelers are apparently willing to risk that he may not be back. Either way, if you think the Steelers aren’t drafting a wide receiver in April you’re nuts.

Here is Version 2 of Cnic’s Steelers’ Mock Draft.

Tweet of the Day… Simple, but damn good advice from the Hall of Famer!

Our Ben Anderson brings up an excellent point about Le’Veon Bell and his “pay me like a #2 receiver” mantra. The majority of balls that Bell catches are still from his position as a running back. These are either designed plays or as is more often the case, they are dump-offs when the primary reads aren’t available. This does not lessen his value as an offensive weapon but these suggestions we see frequently about how “he could start at WR for many teams” is a bit preposterous.

I’m leaning more and more towards passing on Lawrence Timmons’ return to the Steelers.

With Case Keenum going to Denver and Drew Brees set to re-sign in New Orleans, does that open the door for Kirk Cousins in Minnesota? What a QB carousel we have huh?

Here’s a bit of a free agent recap for the Steelers… They’ve already come to deals with Jordan Berry, Matt Feiler, Roosevelt Nix, Xavier Grimble and B.J. Finney. Unrestricted free agents include Arthur Moats, Chris Hubbard, Justin Hunter, Dan McCullers, Fitz Toussaint, Stevan Ridley and Sean Spence. Of those, I expect Hubbard to get a nice payday somewhere else. Moats and Spence cold be back but on minimum deals otherwise they’re both gone. Hunter is well-liked by the team so his return is also possible.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
