SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Let’s Talk Quarterbacks” Edition

Good day to you Steelers’ Fans!

I’ve seen a lot of talk recently about potential trades involving Steelers’ QBs and I want to try and set the record straight. First, take Ben Roethlisberger out of the equation and second, take Mason Rudolph out as well. You don’t draft a guy in the third round and trade him in the same year. So that leaves Josh Dobbs and Landry Jones. Jones is in the final year of his deal and will likely be enticing to any team that is desperate for a veteran backup.

The best the Steelers could likely do is a sixth or seventh rounder for Jones. That does not mean a team won’t be desperate and offer a fifth but that’s pretty unlikely. The Steelers know his value to them. He has starting experience and knows the offense better than Dobbs or Rudolph. Having a veteran backup is obviously important to the Steelers too.

In Dobbs’ case, his stats have been decent through two games but those are somewhat misleading. He’s mostly competed against second and third teamers and he’s been bailed out by some great catches by James Washington and Damoun Patterson. Most teams will see that Pittsburgh is unlikely to keep four QBs. They will more than likely assume Dobbs is the odd man out so if they really want him they could wait for cut day or pluck him from the practice squad. Any team that does though must add him to their active roster.

Anything is possible in the NFL of course but what I’ve laid out is a “most likely to happen” scenario. Big Ben is scheduled to start on Saturday and I’m guessing Landry Jones gets significant snaps as well. The fourth week will feature Dobbs, likely starting, and then Rudolph.

Tweet of the Day… I post this not to make fun of Golson but to illustrate just how difficult it can be going from the college ranks to the pros. Throw in a couple of injuries and you go from a second round pick to pretty much out of football.

Cnic laid out an excellent piece on the Steelers’ punting situation which has to get better.

The NFL cannot get out of its own way on this latest “helmet rule.” They announced yesterday there would be a revised video sent to all teams this week. I’m dead serious when I say this; if you want to get guys leading with their heads out of the game then go back to a soft shell helmet. The helmet, because of how hard it is, has become a weapon. And whether players use it intentionally or not there is no fear with the current helmet on. Take the face masks off and get rid of the hard, outer shell. That will make a difference immediately.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
