SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Injury Concerns” Edition

Good Wednesday to you Steelers’ Fans!

Right now there are two injury issues that I believe bear watching. The first is Ryan Shazier who is nursing a hamstring injury. There are few injuries that linger as long as a hamstring problem and I don’t see Shazier jumping back in to action anytime soon. At least in terms of full activity that is. The other concern I have is Mike Mitchell who has been limited throughout Camp as well. Mitchell has had four shoulder surgeries and for a guy who plays as physically as he does that is a major red flag to me.

The concern for these two defenders goes beyond them however. It looks like Tyler Matakevich is slated to be the primary backup and while he’s shown tremendous progress from last year, he’s a far cry from Ryan Shazier. For Mitchell, who is already a strong safety playing free safety, who replaces him? Rob Golden? Jordan Dangerfield? It has to be Golden because Dangerfield is more of a box safety than anyone. The outside the box thought is William Gay. Could he possibly slide into the free safety spot if necessary? Perhaps Shazier and Mitchell could just get healthy and we wouldn’t have to worry about it right?

Speaking of William Gay, is he along with Darrius Heyward-Bey a shoe-in for this roster? They are both widely respected by the staff and fellow teammates but I can see scenarios where one or both are no longer here. Stay tuned to that.

Tweet of the Day… For you Fantasy Geeks out there.

If you played in the WPIAL or are still a die-hard follower of some of the best high school football in America then make sure you check out Ian’s WPIAL Conference Previews. Outstanding stuff as always!

Sammie Coates is expected back on the practice field today. I took a  look at the WR battle to come.

I was disappointed to learn Ben Roethlisberger won’t play on Sunday when my son and I are in Pittsburgh. I completely agree with the decision but wish he were playing. Oh well.

Our Chris Garman will be on the field prior to the game on Sunday. My guess is he’ll be wearing his T.J. Watt jersey. Hopefully he doesn’t get too obsessed. I don’t need him being taken off the field in cuffs.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
