SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Hargrave-Digger” Edition

Good Day to You Steelers’ Fans!

I mentioned this yesterday but after watching some tape of the game it bears repeating. The Steelers’ Javon Hargrave had a really good game on Sunday. With Stephon Tuitt out because of an elbow injury Hargrave appeared to take on the load himself. He had two first half sacks and was a constant disruption to the Jaguars’ running game in the second half. I tweeted out a GIF of his second sack yesterday and you’ll notice where he was aligned. That’s something to keep an eye moving forward. Allowing him to use his quickness on bigger, slower guards creates havoc for offensive lines.

Really interesting topic from the game that Ben Roethlisberger brought up. He said that the Jags seemed to know a lot of the Steelers’ calls at the line of scrimmage. You’ll recall that Landry Jones was brought in recently to back up Blake Bortles. And then he was promptly cut by the Jaguars yesterday. This is a pretty common tactic in the NFL.

Seems to be some concern about whether James Conner can bounce back after a rough game on Sunday that included the dropping of a potentially game-winning touchdown pass. In case you forgot the young man survived cancer. I think he’ll be fine.

While I think last night’s 54-51 game of Monday Night Football is a bit of an outlier I also think that high-scoring games will become the norm. That one was a bit high but I think both teams scoring into the 30’s and 40’s will become fairly common. The days of consistently great defenses are over. Rules have been heavily slanted towards the offense and colleges just aren’t teaching traditional offensive skills any longer. The Big 12 is coming to the NFL.

As you know by now I have no problem calling out Ben Roethlisberger if he isn’t playing well. It isn’t easy because he’s one of my all-time favorite Steelers. That said, at no time Sunday did the idea of benching him ever cross my mind. You don’t do that to a future Hall of Fame QB especially when your backup has one career pass attempt. Ben will have bad moments in the future and he’s had them in the past. Benching him though? I just don’t see it.

We’ll address this tonight on the Steel City Blitz Steelers’ Podcast presented by 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh but how did the Steelers turn things around in the second half against the Jags’ running game. There were two key factors. Tune in!

Ben Anderson will be filling in on ‘Quick Hitters’ for me tomorrow. I’ll see you again Thanksgiving morning!

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
