SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Four No More” Edition

Good Wednesday to you Steelers’ Fans!

Pretty much everyone who reports or comments on the Steelers makes a roster projection. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler is no different. I mentioned yesterday that Fowler believes the team will keep all four quarterbacks on the active roster come this Saturday. Let me lay out why I don’t think that’s going to happen.

First, Fowler believes the Steelers have invested too much in Josh Dobbs to let him go. If he’s referring to the fourth round pick being used on Dobbs rather than a linebacker, tight end or defensive back then I agree. Much like I didn’t like the decision to waste a fourth rounder on Landry Jones I feel the same about Dobbs. But… that’s where any idea of “invested” goes out the window.

Dobbs has not shown nearly enough at the current time to warrant anything more than an emergency starter status. I do not believe the accuracy is good enough and I do not see him reading defenses at the level needed in the NFL. While this doesn’t mean those things can’t be improved what it does mean is that the Steelers value every spot on the 53-man roster. Using it on a guy who will more than likely never see the field is just not sound football decision-making.

Do I think he would be plucked from the practice squad should he be out there? Actually I do and that’s why I believe you’ll see every effort made by the Steelers to get him on IR.

Tweet of the Day… Just get to work man. Quit social media and join your teammates.

The Steelers made themselves a little more room in the salary cap department by moving some money around on Vance McDonald’s deal. The Steelers converted $3 million of his salary into a signing bonus. They now have about $5 in cap space which is a figure they usually prefer to have entering the season.

Our 53-man roster projections will be coming later this week and unlike many others, we project based on what we think the Steelers will do not what we would do. Seems like common sense to do it that way. Otherwise it’s like creating your own roster on Madden.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
