SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Back to Work” Edition

Good Tuesday to you fine Steelers’ fans out there!

The Steelers were off on a rare Monday yesterday. Normally the players’ traditional day off is Tuesday but with the Family Fest at Heinz and then a game this Friday, Monday became the logical day for a break. That means the team is back to work in Latrobe today and tomorrow before a private practice on Thursday.

I spend a lot of time reading during the summer since I don’t have time for it the rest of the year. I just finished the recent biography of Chuck Noll, “His Life’s Work” by Michael MacCambridge. A couple of takeaways from the book for me were… I too came from a German family. Very interesting how similar the upbringings were in terms of displays of affection and emotion… Terry Bradshaw has always been my favorite Steeler because I know he struggled on and off the field and still found success. It’s important that our heroes have flaws in my opinion and this book illustrated that about Bradshaw… The major lesson that all of us can learn from Coach Noll is that there has to be a separation between work and family. I still find it amazing that when he came home each day from the Steelers’ facility, he left it there. Very little discussion of football at all. So important to have balance in life.

I am hearing that Martavis Bryant should be back with his teammates in practice on Wednesday.

Tweet of the Day… We couldn’t agree more Vince!

The battle for roster spots among wideouts is as intriguing as any I can recall in recent years. Two or three really nice receivers will not make this team.

Steelers.com’s Bob Labriola reports that Tyler Matakevich looks like a completely different player this summer compared to last season. This would seem like common sense considering ‘Dirty Red’ now has a year of pro football under his belt but it goes deeper than that. Matakevich has to be better and that’s a bold statement but it’s true. The depth behind Ryan Shazier and Vince Williams is not good but it sounds like Matakevich is improving it. No one’s ever questioned his football I.Q. or his desire. It has been about him being able to physically handle the demands.

The one guy from this year’s draft class that no one is talking about is Colin Holba. He’s the sixth round pick from Louisville that I originally thought was a tremendous waste. Why? Because he’s a long snapper and you just don’t draft long snappers. To suggest Holba could have been just picked up in free agency following the draft is not accurate because he would have had his choice of any of the 32 teams. So why draft him? Consistency, accuracy and velocity and this kid has all three. While everyone is talking about James Conner and T.J. Watt, don’t forget how important Holba will be.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
