The 2014 Pittsburgh Steelers are set with their 53-man roster and their ten-member practice squad as of yesterday. Things can always change based on any number of factors but these 63 men will represent the black and gold.
-I received both hot and cold responses for my article this weekend on Kevin Colbert, Mike Adams and Landry Jones but that’s what I expected. If you haven’t figured it out already, our goal at SCB is to be honest and opinionated. Other Steelers’ sites will blow sunshine up your rear, but not here.
-I’m glad both Howard Jones and Josh Mauro made it through waivers and signed with the practice squad but don’t forget that other teams can still swoop in and sign these guys. I’m hopeful both remain Steelers for the time being because I like their potential.
-The Steelers will practice today at 1045am as the team begins formal preparations for the Cleveland Browns.
-Mike Tomlin’s first regular season press conference will be on Tuesday at Noon.
-The surprises for me on the 53-man roster were keeping just eight linebackers and the fact that nine offensive linemen were kept as well. The shock there is who rather than the number. Guy Whimper was sent packing and in his place was guard Chris Hubbard. While I’m not a big fan of Whimper, Hubbard didn’t do much for me either.
-Steelers PR man Burt Lauten told Chris today that while Adam Podlesh is not on the roster or on the practice squad, he is still on the Reserved/Did not Report List and can still return.
-One interesting guy on the practice squad is Alejandro Villanueva who played for Army and also served as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan. He was a receiver in college and then spent time as a defensive end in Philadelphia before they cut him. It appears the Steelers intent is to put him on the offensive line. If you ask me, put him at tight end. He has a receiving skill set and he is 6’9″ so just let Ben Roethlisberger lob the ball to him.
-42% of this year’s roster was not on the roster just one year ago. That’s 22 of the 53 guys. Change is underway…
Video for today is from Caddyshack. Are you my friend Danny? Hmm, hmmmm.
