SCB Steelers Quick Hitters for September 15th, 2014

by Steeldad

After two weeks of the season for AFC North teams, the Bengals are 2-0 after defeating Atlanta yesterday and the Browns beat New Orleans. That means Cincy leads the North at 2-0 while Baltimore, Cleveland and Pittsburgh are all 1-1.

-Former Steelers’ player and now sideline reporter Craig Wolfley sees the same exact problem we’ve been harping on here in terms of the inability to stop the run.

-How many times have we seen a player get a big, new contract and then suddenly the hunger is gone? I sure hope this isn’t the case with Marcus Gilbert but he’s looked pretty awful in the first two games. A simple bull rush has beaten him more times than I’d like to remember.

-The Steelers will practice today from 1045am-1230pm.

-Coach Tomlin’s weekly presser will be tomorrow at noon.

-Sean Spence played just seven of 70 defensive snaps against Baltimore and while I realize he was coming off a knee sprain, that number has to increase. For a team struggling to tackle, he is one of their best.

-Stephon Tuitt played just 15 snaps while Brett Keisel played 51. If the run defense doesn’t improve, that difference needs to be evened up significantly.

-While I was more than ready for Ryan Clark to be on his way out of Pittsburgh, Mike Mitchell hasn’t exactly performed well either. Right now, Mitchell is nothing more than a faster version of Clark and that’s not good right now.

-From profootballfocus.com The PFF Game Ball: “The Ravens’ offensive line had their way with the Steelers’ three-man line last night. Generating 2.6 yards per carry before contact for their runners ensured the Ravens were consistently in favorable down-and-distance situations.”

-Not surprisingly Cortez Allen earned a -4.5 score from PFF. They credited him with three missed tackles and the pass interference call near the end zone.

-PFF is not the be-all end-all for me but they do a pretty good job breaking down games.

-I watched the Panthers defeat Detroit yesterday and while their defense, especially the front seven, is very good, the Lions were essentially playing with two brand new tackles.
