SCB Steelers Quick Hitters for October 28, 2014

by Steeldad

It’s Ravens Week. Need we say more?

-The Steelers are off today. Head Coach Mike Tomlin will have his press conference at Noon Eastern. Over/Under on “obviously” is 19.

-Sometimes I couldn’t be more wrong when I predict things when it comes to this team but every once in awhile I hit on things like I did with Heath Miller. Last week, Miller had just one catch in the win over Houston and if there’s one thing I’ve noticed with Miller over the years is that when he has a poor game he almost always bounces back and I felt he would. Miller ended up with seven receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown. Ya me!

-Lost in the discussion of Ben Roethlisberger’s performance and the win in general is the fact that the Steelers nearly let the Colts right back into the game. Fumbles by LeGarrette Blount and Darrius Heyward-Bey could have cost the Steelers the game. Only the ill-timed stumble by Andrew Luck saved the Steelers.

-The fourth and one call which resulted in a touchdown pass to Miller was a thing of beauty and I absolutely loved the fact that Mike Tomlin decided to go for it. A field goal would have been an easy decision but would have left the Colts within two scores. I loved the aggressiveness there.

-I don’t think Tomlin and Dick LeBeau will go so far as to actually deactivate Cortez Allen, but I know it has been discussed in some circles. While I get the sentiment, I don’t know that sitting him is in the best interest of the team. He can still be a valuable special teams player which is where he thrived in college at The Citadel.

-The real test for Martavis Bryant begins now as he is no longer a secret. I expect the Ravens, who will be without cornerback Jimmy Smith, to keep a safety over the top occasionally when Bryant is lined up wide. While that might be bad news for Bryant’s numbers, it could be most beneficial for the rest of the receivers.

-The Steelers are now 21-5 in the month of October since Heinz Field opened in 2001. Only New England has a better home record in that span in the same month.

-The last time the Steelers scored 50 or more points was in 1984 against the San Diego Chargers.

-The last safety the Steelers recorded was in week one of last year versus the Titans when on the opening kickoff the returner kneeled in the end zone after entering the field of play and coming back in.

-I saw several conversations on social media today comparing Roethlisberger and Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw. I firmly believe it’s an apples and watermelons comparison. The game has changed so drastically that comparing the two is fruitless. Keep in mind that Bradshaw started 158 career regular season games. Roethlibserger will hit that total by the end of the season. Bradshaw needed 14 seasons to reach that number while Big Ben is in his 11th. Again, apples and watermelons and that’s just one comparison.
