SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The Morning After Vol.1

Good Monday to you Steelers’ Fans!

A win should never ever feel like a loss but with expectations so high, there is certainly an odd feeling in the air a day removed from the Steelers’ 21-18 win in Cleveland. As I mentioned in my piece last night, the offense never got into sync and had it not been for a big day by Antonio Brown and punt block recovered for a TD we could be talking about something far worse. In any case, every day following a Steelers’ game ‘Quick Hitters’ will be dedicated to the game the day previous. In other words, here comes the ‘Morning After.’

Offensive Player of the Game: Antonio Brown 11 Rec. 182 yards

Defensive Player of the Game: T.J. Watt 7 Tackles, 2 sacks, 1 INT

Special Teams Player of the Game: Tyler Matakevich (blocked punt) and Anthony Chickillo (recovered for TD)

To not give the Browns credit for their effort would be insensitive and not aware of what you saw. They played hard and gave the Steelers everything they could handle. Make no mistake though, the Steelers were their own worst enemy. 13 penalties for 144 yards is beyond ridiculous. The old school Oakland Raiders would be impressed! The Steelers gave Cleveland five of their 20 first downs via the yellow hanky. The penalties and out of sync offense were the earmarks of a poorly prepared Mike Tomlin team. It’s just unacceptable in my opinion to be that undisciplined in the first game of the season.

If you haven’t read Dejan Kovacevic’s article about Ben Roethlisberger getting fired up late in the first half yesterday then you should. I think it speaks volumes about what Big Ben’s expectations are this year and while he’d be the first to tell you it wasn’t his best game, there were lots of things going wrong on offense yesterday.

Tweet of the Day… Good to see you back as well Cam!

I want to give a special shout out to Jas (@JBSteel) who was with her boyfriend yesterday at the game in Cleveland. She tweeted out some pretty awful stuff about the treatment she received while in the stands there. First of all, I don’t understand why people pay money to treat other people this way. It’s disgusting. And to do it to such a good, young lady too. So she was there to root for the Steelers… It doesn’t give anyone the right to be so damn cruel.

Do I think Le’Veon Bell having so few touches was about some for of punishment? Yes, to a degree I believe it was. I also think they were worried about his overall conditioning and whether or not he knew all of the right calls.

I sure would like to know what in the world happened to Bud Dupree. He’s fine throughout the preseason then all of the sudden has a bad shoulder and boom! He doesn’t even play. Chick was great in his place.

I’m sick about Stephon Tuitt’s injury. It’s being speculated that he tore his biceps which means a season lost just days after signing a huge new contract.

I’m not sure that JuJu Smith-Schuster is ready. He just didn’t look like a confident player today.

One of the knocks on Martavis Bryant before his year-long suspension was that he often ran the incorrect routes. It happened again yesterday several times.

As much as it pains me I’ll be re-watching the game again today. What can I say? A labor of love or just a glutton for punishment?

On to the Vikings! Have a great day Steeler Nation!
