SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Morning After” Bengals’ Edition

by Steeldad

Another Monday to walk into work or school with a big ol’ smile on your face Steelers’ Fans!

As always, I want to give you my thoughts on all kinds of random things from yesterday’s game so let’s get to it.

One of the most discussed topics on social media was Mike Tomlin’s decision to go for two points with the Steelers leading 24-20. If you refer to the famous chart created back in the 1970’s for coaches to look at when deciding to kick or go for two, the chart says when leading by four, go for two. This is not gospel however. I believe Mike Tomlin recognized that his defense was up to the task of keeping the Bengals out of the end zone. Either way, if the score stayed at 24-20 it would take a TD to go ahead. Fans were concerned that Cincy would do just that then rather than be able to win on a field goal the Steelers would only be able to tie. I understand both lines of thinking but I believe Tomlin made the right move here. He was not going to be beaten by two field goals.

Vontze Burfict needs to be gone. He’s the epitome of what a football player should not be on the field. He’s  one of the dirtiest players I’ve seen in a long time. I wish I could share some of the things I know he said on the field Sunday but I won’t out of respect for those who told me. Let’s just say he’s a disturbed individual.

I have always said that with Ben Roethlisberger, you have to be willing to live with some plays because he never allows a play to die. Sometimes they don’t end up well and sometimes they end up being huge. One thing I wish he’d do a little less of is go deep on third and short. There’s always a time and place for that, but I didn’t care for the decision to go deep to Cobi Hamilton in the second half. Just move the sticks in that case.

Jeremy Hill learned a valuable lesson that many before him have discovered as well. Hill decided to try and destroy a Terrible Towel following his touchdown. The Bengals would not get in the end zone the rest of the day. Karma!

Tweet of the Day… Vince Williams with more Twitter hilarity.

We had two people who had the ‘Nail the Number’ contest in their grasp until the Steelers tried to go deep late in the fourth. The holding call on Dre Kirkpatrick allowed the Steelers to run out the clock with Big Ben taking a one yard loss on three consecutive plays. Better luck next week people!

Can’t say I was surprised to see the route Eli Rogers scored on. That was his bread and butter at Louisville. That skinny post from the slot… and what a dart by Big Ben!

I could not be happier that Lawrence Timmons is proving me wrong. I really thought this would be it for him in the Steel City but he’s playing so well right now. Would like to see him back on a one-year deal in 2017.

Sounds like Ladarius Green is in concussion protocol. What a magnificent catch for the first down on the play where he was injured. Hope he can go next week.

Same for Stephon Tuitt. The Steelers are incredibly thin on the defensive line right now and cannot afford to lose him.

Can someone please explain how Danny Smith keeps his job as Special Teams’ Coach? Other than a nice return by Sammie Coates, the unit did not do well overall.

Have a great Monday Steeler Nation!
