SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Mock Draft Conundrum” Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers’ Fans!

Mock Drafts. Some are well-thought… Some border on pure insanity… And most fall somewhere in between. Finding quality mock drafts is not easy and I’d like to think we do a pretty good job of it and certainly I’ve seen other sites with quality ones as well. What you need to look for is thought. Does the author actually recognize the needs of each team? Or does he/she just throw names in there because they’d be “sexy” picks? The godfather of the draft process is Mel Kiper, Jr. Like it or not, if it weren’t for him this thing would not be the monster it is today. That said, even he misses on some things. Yesterday he mocked Boise State Linebacker Leighton Vander Esch to the Steelers. While this is certainly a position of need, the Steelers have a long standing pattern of not drafting outside the Power 5 conferences in round one. Until they break this pattern, I see no reason to “mock” it differently. This was probably a situation for Kiper where he figured “they need a linebacker and Vander Esch is available so….” It isn’t easy to be sure but look for mocks where deep thought is involved. They are typically the best.

Catch up with the latest Steel City Blitz Podcast presented by 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh. We recorded last night and discussed Le’Veon Bell, Martavis Bryant, current unrestricted free agents and Cnic’s favorite player in the draft.

Tweet of the Day… JuJu being JuJu.

It was announced last week that the Steelers will have new “throwback” jerseys for 2018. Personally, I’m fine with the bumblebees returning to the vault… I’d like to see the “golden triangle” ones be selected. Here’s a pic below. These were sometimes referred to as “Batman” jerseys because they looked like capes.

Someone actually suggested the ‘block numeral’ jersey be the throwback. A. That should be the regular jersey now and B. I’m officially old if those become throwbacks.

Good point we missed at the end of our podcast last night. We were discussing Joe Haden and what to do with his contract. Like several other Steelers he is due for a roster bonus coming up very soon. If the Steelers pay that then I don’t see any way they won’t retain him for 2018.

Have a great Thursday Steeler Nation!

I don’t see L. Bell as the best back in the NFL. I feel he fits nicely with the unit we have but can he duplicate it else-where?? I say trade him for a 1 and a 4 use the salary to get 2 quality backs and a safety and keep Ridely. Quite with the baby gloves approach with this guy he skips practices makes videos with snoop dog after drug suspensions does show up for the walk thru at playoff time. HE IS NOT STEELER MATERIAL, but he may be a Tomlin type of guy. I grew up with a Steeler team that would have kick his ass on the way out. And i know they all wear skirts now, my opinion is he is not worth it. For what 1 or 2 playoff wins over 5 years.
