The Steelers will practice today starting at 2:55pm ET.
The first full week of training camp is complete and through the eyes of our observers in Latrobe, here’s what I can tell you…
-Steelers’ Rookie OLB Anthony Chickillo is this year’s “Training Camp Superstar.” After dropping roughly 30 lbs, he’s made a nice transition from a defensive end to a stand-up outside backer. While it’s an over-used cliche, this dude has a motor that just doesn’t stop. Whether that translates to a roster spot is uncertain.
-Martavis Bryant reportedly had a minor procedure performed on his elbow but Steelers’ Head Coach Mike Tomlin didn’t have anything to say about it. FOX Sports reported that Bryant could miss 10 days. Quite frankly I’m okay with this. Would rather he miss time now than during the regular season.
-I’ve heard numerous takes about rookie first-round pick Bud Dupree. Some love what he’s doing while others aren’t so sure. What no one can deny is that when he lowers the boom you hear it. Besides Vince Williams, Dupree has been one of the harder hitters this week.
-Speaking of Dupree, I’m really intrigued to see how Keith Butler uses him in regards to possible cover-2 alignments. He could be a “hand in the dirt” type defensive end. Stay tuned on this…
-Ben Roethlisberger has started all 16 games the last two seasons and that type of durability will be needed more than ever with serious questions about just who will back him up. Bruce Gradkowski continues to deal with a bad shoulder. Landry Jones has looked better the last couple of days but I don’t think anyone is ready to call him a back-up yet.
-The Steelers’ trade for Brandon Boykin is a good one for this reason; how often are you going to get a durable starter with a fourth or fifth round draft pick? Tomlin spoke a lot yesterday about Boykin’s return skills.
-Darrius Heyward-Bey has solidified himself as the Steelers’ fourth receiver. He’s having a very good camp so far and while I’m glad for him, I’m disappointed that Sammie Coates hasn’t grabbed that spot.
-Keep an eye on rookie receiver Eli Rogers. Don’t ask me why but I just have a feeling about this kid. Likely headed to the practice squad but he has good speed and return skills.
Tweet of the Day from Charlie Batch brings me a lot of joy!

Speaking of rabble.tv, I’m going to try my hand at calling a game on their website. If you hate listening to the usual guys on TV, then check me out while I call the game. You can even interact with me while I’m doing it. Much more to come.
