SCB Steelers Quick Hitters for 3/24/16

by Steeldad

Good morning Steeler Nation! It’s officially spring but really doesn’t feel like it yet.

The NFL Owners have passed several pieces of new rule legislation this week at their meeting in Florida. Outlawing the chop block by offensive linemen has been a long time coming and should be welcomed by defensive players across the board… The owners also decided to move the touchback line from the 20 to the 25-yard line. My question is “Why?” With more and more kickers banging the kickoffs through the end zone, it was reducing the number of violent collisions which I thought was a ‘good thing’ considering the concussion issue. It seems to me that this will almost ‘test’ coaches to kick the ball a tad shorter in an effort to get return men to bring the ball out. I get it, but then again maybe I don’t.

The Steelers by the way backed both of those moves.

Steelers’ Head Coach Mike Tomlin kind of addressed an ‘elephant in the room’ this week with his comments about the Steelers’ need for a nose tackle. “To make decisions with base defense in mind is not really realistic,” Tomlin said. “The most significant downs in today’s NFL, usually you employ three or more wide receivers on offense and sub-package on defense. If you look at highlights on weekends, the possession downs, the red-zone plays, the explosion plays, oftentimes they are under those circumstances.” (Quote courtesy Mark Kaboly, Trib) He’s absolutely right and Steelers’ fans need to realize this as well. Letting Steve McLendon go was in part about money but it was also because his position was going the way of the dinosaur too.

Tweet of the Day… Yesterday was National Puppy Day I believe.

The Steelers were not eligible for “Hard Knocks” because they were in the postseason last year. Still, I’m always relieved when I see another team announced as this year’s participant. This year, and perhaps rightfully so, the LA Rams will be on the HBO show.

If you forced me to give an answer right now about the Steelers’ plans for the first round of the Draft then I’d say I don’t think it’s going to be a corner.

Anyone see that recent Instagram post from Maurkice Pouncey? Just me or has he gotten a bunch of new ink?

Sweet 16 betting tip for today – Take the teams wearing black or blue jerseys. Win percentage is staggering.

Have a great Thursday Steeler Nation!
