SCB Steelers Quick Hitters for 3/11/16

TGIF right?

#Weddlewatch continues in Steeler Nation as the fans keep hope alive that former Chargers’ safety Eric Weddle will still sign to play in Pittsburgh. Besides the cap space being a factor, Weddle is taking his time with this. He has several visits planned and has told media folks he’s not in a rush. While it could happen, I’ll put his coming to the Steel City at 40/60 right now.

It’s a fair question to ask and it’s been brought up a lot in the last 24 hours. Was spending money on tight end Ladarius Green smarter than spending money on a cornerback? What you have to keep in mind is that the Steelers look for much more specificity in their corners than they do in their tight ends. Plus, with the high contracts CBs are currently getting anyone that would have fit what the Steelers want probably would have cost too much. I’m fine with their decision to sign Green.

Speaking of, here’s my take on what he can do for the offense.

Chris continued his profile of draft prospects with a look at Florida Safety Keanu Neal.

Non-football related topic… Hall of Fame reliever Goose Gossage went off yesterday on the state of baseball. He wasn’t right about everything, but he was darn close.

Tweet of the Day… Let the DWTS build up begin.

The Steelers are reportedly interested in Lions’ defensive end Jason Jones. He’s collected 9.5 sacks the last two seasons. At just 275, I think he fits more of the ‘elephant’ they’ve been looking for. This is a guy who can come from the two or three-point stance. Could be a nice veteran signing here which would add much needed depth.

Coach Tomlin is at the Ohio State pro day today along with members of the other 31 teams. 22 Buckeyes showing off their talents for the scouts today. Likely targets for the Steelers? CB Eli Apple, S Vonn Bell and tackle Taylor Decker.

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com released a mock draft based on the latest free agency moves and had the Steelers taking Memphis QB Paxton Lynch. I had a good conversation with him on Twitter about it. His thinking is that because the Steelers have had better luck drafting guys in rounds outside of the first then why not take a shot? Ben can’t play forever. I see his point but I think we are one or two more years away from such a move.

Have a great weekend Steeler Nation!
