SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Combine Heroes” Edition

Welcome to Monday Steelers’ Fans! Hey, at least it’s a day closer to next season right?

The National Football League Combine is in full swing and this past weekend we certainly saw some guys separate themselves from the pack. Likely number one pick Myles Garrett did nothing to make anyone think he wouldn’t be the number one selection. His overall performance will go down as one of the all-time best at any combine. Will the Cleveland Browns stand pat at number one now or will they trade out?

When we talk specific guys the Steelers may target in terms of EDGE rushers, several had good days. Hassan Reddick probably elevated himself into the top 20 but I still see him as more of WLB in a 4-3 or as an ILB in a 3-4… Charles Harris of Missouri had one of the best days of anyone not named Myles Garrett. I wasn’t crazy about his tape but his performance will help him… Takk McKinley didn’t skip anything at the Combine despite having a torn labrum in his right shoulder. He is scheduled for surgery today and is looking at 4-6 months for recovery. He is a guy I really like for the Steelers at 30… Carl Lawson of Auburn had a huge day as well but I’m very concerned about his tape. Doesn’t set the edge well and is very average against the run in general.

I’ve seen some suggest that the Steelers are pretty well set on defense with the only exception being the slot corner position. I’m not as confident on that claim. I still believe the team needs to upgrade the boundary corner currently held by Ross Cockrell. With Senquez Golson’s status at 50-50 proposition at best, the Steelers have to upgrade. Why else would the report about their interest in Dre Kirkpatrick have come about?

Tweet of the Day… DWill is one of a kind!

The Steelers have said they are moving forward with Ladarius Green despite him missing so much of the 2016 season. The good news is that the tight end class in this draft is very deep. I’ll be surprised if they don’t take one in the first four rounds.

Michigan defensive end Chris Wormley met with Mike Tomlin this weekend. He grew up a Steelers’ fan and said he was looking forward to meeting Coach Tomlin. I think he’s 5-Tech end in the NFL.

One thing we have to do during this period is stay practical. The Steelers will meet with lots of potential picks and frankly, it doesn’t mean a thing. When the Pro Days and visits happen, then you can pay a little more attention.

Get the week started right Steeler Nation!
