SCB Steelers Quick Hitters for 4/4/16

Happy Monday Steelers’ Fans.

Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Pirates who opened their 2016 season with a 4-1 win over the rival St. Louis Cardinals.

One guy that we feel is very intriguing in the draft is Penn State defensive end Carl Nassib. Chris has the details on him.

As part of their new ‘moneyball’ system of rebuilding the team the Cleveland Browns released hard-hitting safety Donte Whitner. Would he fit in Pittsburgh where there’s a need for his services? Chris gives you his take.

Now’s the time where draft rumors for each team really start ramping up a bit. The pinnacle is of course in the days prior to the draft when all the smokescreens come out. One name that keeps coming up for the Steelers is Boise State safety Darian Thompson. He had really good pro day last week which may have elevated his draft stock. I still see him as a second rounder but I’ve been wrong before.

Tweet of the Day… Little plug for the Hines Ward Show

Steelers’ Pre-Draft visits this past week included Duke Safety Jeremy Cash, Miami Safety Deon Bush, LSU offensive lineman Jerald Hawkins and Georgia Tech cornerback David White. While pre-draft visits aren’t a ‘be-all, end-all’ in terms of who the Steelers will draft they do give a gut feeling so to speak. More than half of the Steelers’ picks over the last few years have come from such visits.

I continue to think the Steelers could select as many as two corners and a safety in this draft. With the depth solid at both positions and a need on this roster, it makes too much sense.

The 49ers and Broncos are close to a deal that would send Colin Kaepernick to Denver. I think he can improve under Gary Kubiak but I’m not sure how much. Big risk for the Broncos.

Have a great week Steeler Nation!

What Cleveland is doing with their personnel is so dumb that it’s even stupid by Browns standards, which are incredibly low.
The only safety I have a 1st round grade on is Neal. But, more importantly, the Steelers never take players from outside the big 5 conferences in the 1st and usually not even in the 2nd. I don’t see Thompson at 25, but that’s me.
While I do not count Cortez Allen, because we have no idea what his roster status will be in July; I see 4 CBs and 3 safeties who project to make the roster now on a team that usually keeps 9 or 10 DBs. I agree with you on the 2 CBs and 1 safety projection.
