SCB Steelers-Lions Postgame Quick Hitters

Well the first preseason game is in the books and the Steelers dropped a 30-17 game to the Detroit Lions. Please do not rush to the nearest bridge in the Steel City. Things will be fine. This is not about winning and losing it’s about evaluating players. Below are my observations as the game unfolded.

First Half Thoughts

Second round pick Sean Davis had one major knock on him coming out of Maryland and that was missed tackles. He missed a few early on but also made a few good tackles as well.

I swear James Harrison just doesn’t slow down. He had a strip-sack which ended a promising Lions’ drive.

Javon Hargrave was as advertised. He was super quick off the tilted nose position and stood his ground several times.

After a sluggish start Landry Jones picked up a TD pass to Darrius Heyward-Bey who made a terrific catch.

I don’t know that it’s a foregone conclusion that Fitz Toussaint is the third running back. Daryl Richardson looked really good. Granted he was up against reserves but his speed and quickness were impressive.

Doran Grant had a pick-six and made some nice plays but like Davis, he needs to do a better job of tackling too.

Sammie Coates had a couple of plays to forget. The first, he looked lost as he came across the formation for a screen. He bobbled the ball before getting hit for no gain. Then he caught a pass across the middle and fumbled it over to the Lions.

Second Half Thoughts

First and foremost, it’s almost all reserves right now so opinions have to be taken with a grain of salt…

As I stated above, I really like Daryl Richardson. He made some more nice runs and had a nice pickup on screen pass as well. Also had a nice blitz pickup too.

Hard not to like the end around by Demarcus Ayres. Good speed and good use of his blocker in front of him.

Sammie Coates rough night continued with another fumble, this time on an end around. I can’t stress enough how disappointing his performance tonight has been.

Chris Boswell picked up right where he left off with a field goal and two PATs.

While the majority of guys on the kickoff team probably won’t even be on the roster, I’m still not sure why the Steelers retained Special Teams’ Coach Danny Smith. Regardless of who has been on the field, his units are guaranteed to get burned at some point.

To no one’s surprise, the Steelers stayed in base 3-4 a lot tonight.

Dustin Vaughan is what we call a “camp arm.” He will not be around too much longer. Big arm, but struggles to read defenses and not very accurate.

What I liked tonight: Javon Hargrave, Doran Grant and Daryl Richardson.

What I didn’t like tonight: Penalties, missed tackles from guys who the team needs to contribute, Alejandro Villanueva and Sammie Coates.
