SCB Steelers’ Draft Journal: Vince Biegel

by Steeldad

The Pittsburgh Steelers recently double-dipped when they went to Wisconsin’s Pro Day. They met with both T.J. Watt and today’s focus, Vince Biegel. Is Biegel on par with Watt or is he a guy the Steelers could target in the later rounds?

Vince Biegel, OLB, Wisconsin

6’3″ 245 pounds

Key Combine Stats: 4.67 forty, 21 reps at 225 lbs, 6.9 on 3-cone drill

2016 Stats: 44 tackles, six tackles for loss, four sacks

What’s to Like: Biegel comes from a long line of football players who played at the FBS level… He’s a smart player… Reads things pre-snap very well and is good at communicating to teammates…  Also, recognizes a play as it develops quicker than most… Does a pretty good job of setting the edge and forcing the run back inside… Played on both sides of the formation and was able to perform duties equally well… Drops into coverage decently… Shows the ability to shoot a gap when he diagnoses the play… Solid tackler

What’s Concerning: Easily washed under by size at point of attack… Has to add some strength to win more stalemates at the line of scrimmage… Very little bend around the edge… Burst is average at best; rarely gets to quarterback by winning against larger tackle… Hand usage isn’t great… Gets behind man quickly in trail coverage and often can’t make it up… Zone coverage skills are OK but often loses his spacing and creates lanes for QB… Pursuit angles need improvement; often underestimates speed of ball carrier.

The Verdict: Biegel is a born leader who was a team captain at Wisconsin. Can’t question his effort or hard-working mentality. I’m not seeing why the Steelers were enamored enough with him to dine with he and T.J. Watt while they were in Madison for the Pro Day. He’s little to no threat as a pass rusher which the Steelers desperately need. Could he develop into that over time? Perhaps, but the Steelers aren’t in a position to wait in my opinion. Biegel is an intense guy; the very type you want playing linebacker for you if you’re a Steelers’ fan. I’m just not sure the physical tools are there.
