SCB Steelers’ Draft Journal: Gerald Everett

by Steeldad

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in full combine mode and met with tight end Gerald Everett. He’s a former basketball player with a major upside so let’s check him out.

Gerald Everett, TE, South Alabama

6’4″ 220 pounds

2016 Stats: 49 receptions, 717 yards, 4 TDs

Combine Stats: 4.59 forty, 22 reps at 225, 37″ vertical

What’s to Like: Everett is athletic freak who is yet another former basketball player converted to football… Really good hands… Able to use his body to ‘box out’ defenders… high-points the ball well… Potentially very versatile… Good first step… Is a match-up nightmare for linebackers due to speed; equally as bad for defensive backs due to size… Always a run-after-catch threat.

What’s Concerning: Inexperience is a concern but not a huge one… He’s not afraid to block, but he’s got serious work to do… Played almost exclusively out of wing position on right or left; will need to show flexibility in pro game… Poor blocking starts with him not using his size… Often resorts to a low or cut block… As a move TE, he needs to be more physical; often stalemates at best… Route-running leaves a lot to be desired.

The Verdict: The Steelers met with Everett at the Combine which at the very least shows interest. The overall tight end class was excellent at the Combine which may have the Steelers thinking they can wait to grab one. Everett is willing to block and that’s a great start because right now, that’s a major weakness. He played just one year of high school football, played at UAB and then was forced to South Alabama after UAB shut down football. He strikes me as an immediate threat in the seam and in the red zone. I’m not yet clear on where he goes in the draft but he may end up being a really good pro.
