SCB Steelers’ Draft Journal: CB Teez Tabor

by Chris Nicolaou

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in a difficult position to gauge because of multiple factors, but they will have their choice of players when selection 30 is on the clock. Jalen (Teez) Tabor’s stock is falling and he should be available at 62. This player is one to watch for, as he could fall to into the Steelers’ lap in round 2, but are his concerns too daunting?

Teez Tabor #31 | University of Florida

6′ 199lbs | Junior

What’s to like: Has good size for the position. Aggressive in run support, get off blocks and goes low at ball carriers. Always hungry to make the tackle. A reliable tackler. Excels in zone and in man coverage. Sticky in coverage, has hand in receiver’s pocket on short and intermediate routes. Good ball skills in terms of breaking up passes. Aggressive when the ball is in the air, wants to make a play on it. Mirrors receiver’s routes well down field.

Concerns: Long speed a big concern, ran poorly at the NFL Combine and at his Pro Day. According to NFL.com, Tabor has been suspended due to drug tests and a run-in with a teammate in practice. Needs to jam the receiver, gives a free release too often. Lacks desired athleticism. I don’t see much fire or passion in his game, not much emotion. Source tells me he would avoid Tabor because of unrevealed off field concerns. Missed interception opportunities. Needs work defending slant routes, gives up the inside too easily.

Verdict: With a poor combine and off field concerns looming, Tabor’s stock has plummeted. His is a good coverage corner who is a willing tackler, but still needs some work in discipline and his long speed is of great concern. The Steelers are assumingly going to choose a cornerback rather early, could Tabor be on their board? I think Tabor fits the older mold of what the Steelers desire in their cornerbacks. The Steelers are transitioning into a more clean, athletic defensive team. I don’t think Tabor fits that criteria.
