Release of the Steelers’ Schedule Takes Predictions to a New Level of the Absurd

If we haven’t learned by now that the National Football League and Roger Goodell love getting attention in any and all forms then we really won’t ever get it. Take for example Goodell floating the idea of adding yet another day to the NFL Draft while continuing his crusade to add playoff teams as well.

The NFL got a nice dose of attention this past week when the schedules for all 32 teams were released. While I understand the excitement this release brings we must learn to temper this boost of enthusiasm because there is still so much to be done and so much that can happen between now and the start of the season.

Heck, we haven’t even had the draft yet.

What made this entire event even more preposterous was the fact that I saw bloggers and pundits for many top publications issue their predictions for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the other 31 teams following the release of the schedule Wednesday night.

I saw one fairly respected writer list the Steelers at 10-6 for 2014. While I realize that this is typically done to generate readership, I just don’t understand how anyone could predict that for the Steelers right now and remain serious about it.

Did the defensive line suddenly reincarnate Aaron Smith at 26 years old as well as a youthful Casey Hampton? Did Lynn Swann and John Stallworth come back to compliment Antonio Brown?

Do we have any evidence of who might be getting to the passer on a regular basis?

Making predictions based solely on a schedule is just plain goofy to me. We have no idea of how a new coach in Cleveland could affect that team or whether Atlanta bounces back and is a challenge at the end of the season.

Once the draft is over and free agent rookies have been signed then we can start to think about predictions but until then we really need to just use the release of the schedule for it’s more important purpose; making sure your family knows when not to interrupt you for three hours each week.

The two most important things for the Steelers are , first draft well and second don’t treat spring training and preseason like we are the defending Superbowl champs. Last preseason season we were stale and everyone said “oh it’s only preseason” and it followed them right through the first month of regular season. I know Tomlin works these guys but they have a bunch of on field stuff to work on and they aren’t in the position to save it for the regular season.
