Possible Final Cuts that could Help the Steelers in 2015

by Steelbydesign

News hit yesterday that former first round pick of the Cleveland Brown, Phil Taylor was at the Steelers facility meeting with the team.

The Steelers ultimately decided to pass when the nose tackle couldn’t pass a physical. It was nothing more than a proverbial kicking of the tires. However, it shows the Steelers are willing to keep searching in order to fill holes on their roster.

We’ve decided to tab a few names around the league that could get the axe soon like Taylor did, that could come in and fill a role for the Steelers.

Andy Levitre, G, Titans
In Mike Munchak’s final season as head coach in Tennessee, Levitre was one of the best guards in the league and was a big signing for the Titans. Munchak’s former team has started the same 5 lineman in consecutive preseason games, and Levitre isn’t part of that starting lineup. He’s due 6.5 million this year, which is a lot for a backup guard.

Munchak obviously saw something he liked in Levitre at one time, even if his play has dropped off some since then. With the Steelers’ top interior backup, Cody Wallace, now a starter, the team could use more depth there. The Steelers could also use a little competition for Ramon Foster, who’s in his contract year.

Donald Brown, RB, Chargers
Donald Brown was seen as a breakout candidate when he signed with the Chargers in the 2014 off-season, finally getting to lead a depth chart on his own. Unfortunately he suffered from concussions last season and never really go off the ground in San Diego. The Bolts obviously have new plans, drafting Melvin Gordon in the first round of the 2015 draft.

Josh Harris looked bad in the Steelers’ pre-season finale, and I think the team would have no issue getting him the the practice squad if they cut him. He looked particularly bad in the pass blocking department; and area where Brown has shined in his career, especially in Indianapolis. The team needs a reliable backup to DeAngelo Williams for the first two games of the season.

Christine Michael, RB, Seahawks
My guess is Michael, after spending his career so far behind Marshawn Lynch would want to go somewhere that would give him more carries. That being said, if we could lure him to Pittsburgh he’d be a huge upgrade over Josh Harris, and maybe even DeAngelo Williams. Donald Brown feels more realistic, but I had to list Michael here, as he’s a very talented player that could lose out to the numbers game, and fills a need.

Domata Peko/Devon Still, DL, Bengals
I have a feeling one of these guys gets cut loose from Cincinnati. Peko is more expensive and older, so he feels more likely. Being a Cincinnati native, I can tell you that Peko has been a fan favorite for years. He’s a very personable guy, and a great teammate. However, his play has dropped off dramatically lately. He still may be an upgrade over Cam Thomas.

Peko is an interior lineman in Cincinnati, but I think that he has the body type to play on the edge in the Steelers’ base defense. The Steelers have already shown they think they could use help on the defensive line.

Riley Cooper, WR, Eagles
This one feels like a long shot, but I do wonder if the Steelers are truly as confident in DHB playing on the outside for 4 games as they say they are. I know that worries me. Riley Cooper is the most talented receiver I could think that could be cut soon. He would be an acceptable option to replace Martavis Bryant in the short term.
