To No One’s Surprise the Steelers Stay on the Sidelines as Free Agency Begins

by Steeldad

You thought this year was going to be different didn’t you? You saw the Steelers re-structure the contracts of Marcus Gilbert, Mike Mitchell and Maurkice Pouncey which meant more cap space.

Although Ben Roethlisberger’s contract situation has yet to be resolved, the team, through these moves and the release of a few players have roughly $11 million in salary cap space.

With massive needs at both outside linebacker and cornerback, Steelers’ fans watched the opening bell of free agency come and go with not even so much as a peep from the front office.

Social media was on fire with the usual comments regarding the team’s lack of moves which comes every year at this time. The problem though is the Steelers really do have needs that can’t just be addressed through the draft.

As poorly as they’ve drafted in recent years even they should know that they need to add some free agent starters.

To be fair, the Steelers can still find starters in free agency but some of the names we thought were options are long gone. Worse yet, fans are left to wonder why this team, with so much more space than we anticipated, has stood pat to this point.

I found reports earlier today about the team’s interest in Darrelle Revis to be interesting if not a bit humorous. Revis has always been one to follow the money and to think he’d give the Steelers a “hometown discount” made me chuckle.

If anything, it at least told us that someone was awake in the Steelers’ front offices today.

None of us should hit the panic button because of the inactivity so far today because this isn’t abnormal for our Steelers. But if Kevin Colbert is asleep at the wheel like this for the next few days Steeler Nation might go off the rails.
