Home Steelers 2015 Season Is Michael Vick being a Pittsburgh Steeler worth abandoning your fanhood?

Is Michael Vick being a Pittsburgh Steeler worth abandoning your fanhood?

by Ben Anderson

This is just an op ed and has little to do with anything directly related to the team. It’s actually directed at us, all of us in the fanbase.

I love Steelers fans. Love them. They are some of the best informed, best educated, most passionate football fans in the country. However, we do as a group have a tendency to overreact to things, even when they have little impact on us.

In case you’ve been hiding under a rock, Michael Vick was signed by the Steelers yesterday and Bruce Gradkowski was put on Injured Reserve after having surgery on his left hand that will keep him out for a month. That has led fans to take positions ranging from Joy to Indifference to Disappointment to Disgust.

I’ve heard that Vick will help us and become the new 2 point specialist the team needs. I’ve heard people say they don’t care because Vick will be the 3rd QB and probably never get in (those people are mistaken on both counts, in my opinion). I’ve heard that Vick isn’t that good a QB anymore. I’ve heard conspiracy theories about Tomlin not liking Bruce Gradkowski and wanting to bring in his “friend”. That argument is my favorite because it was bantered about by a loud mouth who is sure he knows what he’s talking about and he swore he would not to be a Steelers fan anymore.

My response? “Good riddance. Turn in your Terrible Towels and go be a Browns fan. You were obviously never that invested in the team anyway.”

If the Rooneys see a QB who has committed a crime, paid a severe penalty for that crime, is trying to own his previous behavior and be a good citizen; and can help them at their place of business, why should you second guess their decision?

I find it difficult to understand why some people are struggling with the simple concepts of forgiveness and decency here. What Vick did was awful, no doubt. But when a man makes a mistake the very most you can hope for is that he owns what he has done, comes up with a plan to make amends and sticks to that plan. He has done that.

I love my dogs. No one will ever hurt them. In fact, if someone walked up to them and tried to injure them while in my presence I guarantee said individual would leave that meeting in an ambulance.  That said, let’s not compare what Vick did to rape, killing a person or molesting children. Those are unforgivable. Being raised around dog fighting and his family not incorporating love of pets into his perspective does not excuse what Vick did, but it does explain it.

Vick has tried to move forward from that as a better man. Why is it that we are having such a hard time accepting that effort and assisting him in that endeavor? Do we want him to fail in order to justify our vitriol?

Getting back to the simple concept of decency and forgiveness, let me remind you Steeler Nation that you forgave Ben Roethlisberger, you forgave James Harrison, you forgave Le’Veon Bell, you forgave Alameda Ta’amu, you forgave Santonio Holmes, you forgave Hines Ward, you forgave Jeff Reed. Some of you even wanted us to forgive serial woman beater Cedric Wilson. Those people you forgave earned your forgiveness through their statements and actions. Why is it so hard for you to give Mike Vick that same chance, especially when he committed that awful crime 10 years ago and has paid a steep, albeit appropriate, price for having done so?

I’ll be the first to admit that I am a judgemental person. I have a lot of strong opinions and I try to look at things pragmatically. But, in times like this I try to remind myself of something my mom told me growing up. It went something like this: “Thou shall not judge because thou hast screwed up in the past also”.

Paraphrasing obviously, but you get the point. We all have done things at some point that we’re not proud of. We would all like people around us to give us the chance to show that we’re a better person than that action or actions portrayed us as. Give Mike Vick that same opportunity.

a question for the author Ben Anderson. If you were going on vacation for two weeks, would you be comfortable with Michael Vick dog sitting for you? I think that’s a valid question that most people need to ask themselves. If the answer is yes, then there should be no problem with him being the quarterback. If the answer is no, then you still have some kind of concerns over his character. And, a backup quarterback who causes concerns about character in the locker room can be an issue.

While I find the comparison completely irrelevant and far reaching, yes I would.
Vick having committed a crime in the past has nothing to do with his behavior as a teammate.
I think you’re working very hard at trying to convince yourself that you have a valid argument and failing. You would like me to agree with you to validate it but I find it ridiculous.

Abandon your fanhood? Over a single player signing? Is Michael Vick a d-bag in many a person’s mind, yes. Would I let him watch my dog, no. How many of the same people that are behind Big Ben now abandon him and wanted management to cut him when he was accused of rape. Twice. Just because someone can be forgiven, doesn’t mean they have to be your friend, watch your dog, date your daughter, or have a cold beer with them.

The questions are, Is this validation that the front office sucks at drafting?? Have the Steelers lost there moral values?? If Vick can pick up the offense in no time why does it take the defense years to do the same?? Go ahead Chris you seem to think you know the answers, just watch out where your foot lands. BTW the Steelers are absolutely known for great defense, not waiting for the guys to gel Get real we as Steeler fans demand great defense and always will.KNOW YOUR ROLE!!

If you abandon the Steelers because of one player, then you were never a fan in the first place. Simple as that. The Steelers front office doesn’t care about you or me or any other fans. They sign who they want based on need. The “steeler” way of the past is no longer anyway.

So what is a fan, what makes a fan, and keeps a fan? Fans fill the seats, keep the money coming. Fans follow players they like, they are engaged in. They want to like them and what they represent. Steeler fans have been loyal through horrible seasons why, because the organization dictated that level of professionalism that people expect. They loved the players even if they were crap. NBA is a perfect example of a losing professional organization who did not care what ” what kind of players where on their teams” they just wanted to extend the bench. Say what you may, but if an organization does not hold up to professional standards like many other professionals, fans will leave, even when they were ” real fans” . Does not mean they weren’t fans just means they have higher expectations, and why would anyone waste limited valuable time watching some one that does not uphold professionalism. Other professionals who raped, wife beat, or killed dogs would be working in a fast food joint. If a teacher was killing animals in a garage do you think he/she would be working today even if they were the best teacher. Most people thought the Steelers were about professionalism and that is why people are pissed. Vick’s crime was not a mistake it was a choice. This was not a one time thing. It was a repeated behavior. He should loose the rare and exceptional opportunity of playing professional ball when he choose crime. There was a time when crime in this country was looked down upon. People did not commit crime because they knew the ramifications. Not today, and the Steelers will loose respect over this with many of their “fans”. Marrying Ben off and him starting a family does not erase his past behavior just like doing time for Vick’s crime does not erase the sour taste in people’s mouths.

I think anybody who supports a sport that pays millions to players who have raped women, taken illegal drugs and promoted dog fighting needs to be put in the dog ring themselves. Shameful—would you support one of those people teaching children as well? If it was a man, I’m sure you would.

Ben Anderson August 28, 2015 - 11:52 pm

Wait. So now supporting football is a sexist thing and not just about looking the other way regarding legal and moral issues, which is bad enough on it’s own? Make far reaching conclusions much?

Quick point. Just to be very clear, using hyperbole and superlatives in your arguments will tend to make those arguments very easy to dismiss. If you want to be heard, write intelligently. All I see when I read your comment is an angry, biased person with an axe to grind. In other words, I tuned you out before I even finished reading what you had to say.

MH August 28, 2015 - 11:59 pm

Apparently you have an axe to grind as well. Trying to act superior by critiquing my writing actually says that you are a lowlife like the people who support the idiot football players. I’m sorry, but I did get a real education unlike these football players who run across the field and make millions. Also, if you tuned me out, why did you respond? I think I would like to hear that response Ben.

Ben Anderson August 29, 2015 - 12:08 am

Hahahahaha! Your writing style says something else about your level of English education. I responded to you because I am trying to set a tone on this site that eschews trolls. I’m not looking to create an echo chamber, but at least try to stay on topic and do away with the pointless accusations.

MH August 29, 2015 - 12:11 am

Ben, before you will inevitably block me because that’s what your type does–and trust me that a screen shot will be taken so I can make sure that everyone knows you can’t handle women in your comments–maybe you should grow up and not worry about sports so much. There are more things in this life important than supporting criminals.

Ben Anderson August 29, 2015 - 12:14 am

You haven’t written anything ban worthy. Although I do find it curious that you are spending time commenting on an “unimportant sports” site when you find it irrelevant. Have a nice life. Feel free to share with whomever you like what I think of you.

MH August 29, 2015 - 12:14 am

So you are calling me a troll because I am a woman? That is a good one Ben…. I hope your fans like that. Anyways, I hope everyone also notices that you did not attack any other man’s education or writing on this forum. As soon as you suspected I was a woman you came after me.

Ben Anderson August 29, 2015 - 12:15 am

I find you a troll because you commented with the sole aim of picking a fight. That is by definition a troll.

MH August 29, 2015 - 12:17 am

Actually, that is not the definition of a troll. Did you ever look at a dictionary or are you one of those that think they are so smart that they can create terms. I believe the real term is “internet troll.”

Ben Anderson August 29, 2015 - 12:19 am

“I believe the real term is ‘internet troll.’ “ – Are we not on the internet?

MH August 29, 2015 - 12:22 am

You said “troll” not “internet troll.” Since this is a forum for proper academic language, you must use the proper phrase so that you do not misrepresent your intention. I’m sure there is a possibility you have short-term memory or blindness and don’t know what you said.

Ben Anderson August 29, 2015 - 12:16 am

Incidentally, “anyways” is not a word and I have words with plenty of men when they deserve it. It was just your turn.

MH August 29, 2015 - 12:20 am

So, now I am uneducated because I lapse to my local dialect and used the word “anyways?” I must apologize–apparently this is an academic forum where I must use proper English. I must discontinue this conversation because I am laughing so hard that you believe FOOTBALL is worthy of formal academic talk.

Ben Anderson August 29, 2015 - 12:22 am

Good for you. You are right. I am wrong. You obviously have a much more evolved sense of humor. I have no idea how to communicate. #TrollOnPlaya

And yet, somehow he remains unaffected by it.
