Fixing the Steelers: A 2018 Offseason Approach

by Chris Nicolaou

With the 2018 NFL Free Agency upon us, I am going to go through the offseason as if I were Kevin Colbert. I am not Colbert, but I am much more handsome and much more creative. This is the first time I am attempting this exercise so forgive some of the irregularities in the contract projections. I go through the in-house moves, free agency and even the NFL Draft.

Team Cap Space: $1,022,015

In-House Moves:

Cut:

Coty Sensabaugh – Saves $1.4M
William Gay – Saves $ 1.75M
Mike Mitchell – Saves $5M
JJ Wilcox – Saves $3.125M

Total 2018 Savings: $11.275M

Restructure/Extend:

Joe Haden – Currently facing $11,916,666 cap charge with a contract expiring after the 2019 season. Extending Haden will lower his cap charge for 2018 and will keep Haden around longer.

Free Agency:

Sign:

Christian Jones, ILB, CHI. 3 years/$9M $4M GTD.

Jones would be a very good addition to the Steelers as he could be a spot starter along with very good depth at the position if the Steelers find their starter via the NFL Draft. Jones would be excellent on special teams and in goal line situations. Below, I asked Jason from OverTheCap about how much Jones should get in free agency.

Terrence Brooks, S, NYJ. 1 year/900k, $100k GTD

Brooks is a shot in the dark addition. He is simply a safety depth add who has the versatility to play both safety spots in a pinch. Brooks is a former third round selection.

Michael Campanaro, WR/Return Specialist, BAL. 2 years $3.75M, $1.5M GTD

Campanaro doesn’t add a ton as a wide receiver but can start in the slot in a pinch. His specialty is as a returner and the Steelers desperately need to find some success and continuity at both the punt and kick return spots. Eli Rogers replacement. Steelers can focus on a bigger receiver in the draft to replace Martavis Bryant with in the future.
