5 Takeaways from Preseason Game One: Steelers vs. Giants

by Chris Nicolaou

The Dobbs Show

Joshua Dobbs made some good throws downfield including a very nicely thrown touchdown to Cobi Hamilton. Mainly threw to 1st read. Need to see him go through a progression more often, which lead to his interceptions. Dobbs played his best when on the run, would like to see him in the pocket a bit more. Play calling was very vanilla and blocking wasn’t great.

Stat line:
Dobbs: 8-15, 100 yards passing, 1 TD, 2 INT. 1 TD called back. 16 yards rushing. Sacked 3 times for -22 yards

Javon Hargrave

Hargrave was dominant again in both the pass and run game. Penetrates the backfield with force and is so quick off the line of scrimmage. His snap timing is excellent. I cannot wait to see his growth throughout the season. Came away very impressed with him.

Covering Tight Ends

This seems to be an ongoing problem in Pittsburgh. I know, Ryan Shazier didn’t play, but that’s my point. Of the linebackers, Shazier can’t be the only one to watch tight ends. We can expect this to be a thorn in the defense’s side again.

Steelers will face these tight ends this year:

David Njoku (x2)
Kyle Rudolph
Zach Miller
Larry Donnell/Ben Watson/Maxx Williams (x2)
Ben Koyack/Marcedes Lewis
Travis Kelce
Tyler Eifert (x2)
Eric Ebron
Jack Doyle
Martellus Bennett
Gronk
CJ Fiedorowicz

Mike Hilton

Arguably the player of the game. Hilton carried his ‘camp darling’ title over into his first game as a Steeler. Hilton ended up with 6 solo tackles, 1 sack and 1 fumble  recovery. His speed and quickness was on display as he blitzed and pursued from the slot position. Was a force and around the ball on both defense and special teams. Bravo, young man.

TJ Watt

Watt had 2 sacks and 3 QB hits. His first sack was a coverage sack in which the quarterback ran into Watt, still a heads up play by the rookie. Watt needs to add some functional strength as he was easily stonewalled. On his to-do list should also be developing a counter move and working back inside when being run up the arc.

Ok here goes the defense played very well, but there were some wr’s running uncovered. Fitzgerald Toufaint sucks i have seen him now for a few years and i can’t understand how he gets a hat every Sunday. Watt is going to do just fine, were was the rest of the draft class, Dobbs play was c- at best. Cobi Hamilton deserves some praise. I know you are a Haley fan but, what they were running last night was in fact his offense no vanilla. overall grade would be a B for the defense and a c- for the offense. P.S. Watson looked pretty good.
