Our Final Version of the Steelers’ 53-Man Roster

by Steeldad

The Pittsburgh Steelers finished the preseason with a 1-3 record following last night’s loss to the Carolina Panthers. With the 53-man roster needing to be set by Saturday at 4pm Eastern, this is our final stab at selecting the 2014 roster.

OFFENSE (25)

Quarterbacks (2) – Ben Roethlisberger, Bruce Gradowski

Running Backs (3) – Le’Veon Bell, LeGarrette Blount, Dri Archer

Fullback (1) – Will Johnson

Wide Receivers (6) – Antonio Brown, Markus Wheaton, Lance Moore, Justin Brown, Martavis Bryant, Darrius Heyward-Bey

Tight Ends (4) – Heath Miller, Matt Spaeth, Michael Palmer, Brice Davis

Linemen (9) – Maurkice Pouncey, Ramon Foster, David DeCastro, Marcus Gilbert, Kelvin Beachum, Cody Wallace, Mike Adams, Guy Whimper, Wesley Johnson

HERE’S OUR THINKING: Landry Jones may have been 14 of 18 last night but he was sacked three times and looks incredibly uncomfortable in the pocket. I just can’t see Mike Tomlin wasting a roster spot on him with so much depth needed elsewhere. The one question here will be the health of Martavis Bryant who reportedly has a significant shoulder injury from last night. It’s severe enough where discussions of the IR/Designated to Return list are in play. Davis is the fourth TE but is there to long snap until Warren is ready to go.

DEFENSE (25)

Defensive Line (7) – Steve McLendon, Cam Heyward, Cam Thomas, Stephon Tuitt, Josh Mauro, Daniel McCullers, Brett Keisel

Linebackers (9) – Lawrence Timmons, Ryan Shazier, Jason Worilds, Jarvis Jones, Arthur Moats, Vince Williams, Sean Spence, Howard Jones, Terence Garvin

Defensive Backs (9) – Troy Polamalu, Mike Mitchell, Shamarko Thomas, Robert Golden, Ike Taylor, William Gay, Cortez Allen, Antwon Blake, B.W. Webb

HERE’S OUR THINKING: The question comes down to the linebackers. Will Tomlin keep Chris Carter making it ten LBs or will they risk putting Howard Jones on the practice squad? Or… Any chance Carter is sent packing and Dan Molls the tackling machine makes it? My feeling is that Carter has run out of chances. Will Allen will remain in play because of how often the defense is in nickel. If they choose to drop to five WRs or three TEs he could fill that spot. New acquisition Webb replaces McCain.

SPECIALISTS (3) -Punter (1) – Brad Wing, Kicker (1) – Shaun Suisham Long Snapper (1) – Greg Warren

HERE’S OUR THINKING: Tomlin is riding with Wing who punted nine times last night. Davis will fill in while Greg Warren is recovering from his knee injury which could be just a couple more weeks.
