DeCastro Situation Coming Down to the Wire

by Steeldad

There’s always a risk when you write an article like this. As soon as I hit “publish” there’s a good chance the complete opposite of what I say on this page will happen. For our sake I hope that’s the case because right now, I don’t have a good feeling about David DeCastro’s contract situation.

A few weeks back, we learned that the major sticking point between DeCastro’s side and the Steelers was guaranteed money. In a game that doesn’t feature guaranteed contracts players, especially in their second or third contract, are looking for as much guaranteed money as they can get. I certainly can’t blame them for this is a cruel game that can end careers on a single play.

With DeCastro coming off of a Pro Bowl season and all-pro selection, he certainly has some strong support for getting as much as he can. The Steelers however aren’t “the Steelers” for just any reason.

They have a very long-standing way of doing things and while they certainly plan for flexibility one way or another they aren’t going to get crazy. With Antonio Brown scheduled to make a boatload with a new deal next year the Steelers can only pay DeCastro so much.

Often times teams have to make sacrifices in order to pay other players. The Steelers did it with Keenan Lewis and they did it with Mike Wallace. So sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn’t.

If DeCastro ultimately walks then the Steelers offseason plans for 2017 take a significant turn. Ramon Foster isn’t getting any younger on the other side of center either so interior line becomes a huge area of need.

The Steelers do not negotiate contracts once the regular season begins and I don’t see an exception here. Last minute deals have been done before and perhaps that’s where this is headed. But right now, I’m not feeling real confident and I don’t think you should either.
