Chickillo Brings His “Motor” to the Steelers

by Steeldad

In the first five plays I watched of new Steelers’ defender Anthony Chickillo, I saw him line up in four different spots along the front line of the Miami Hurricanes’ defense. None of those however were the position the Steelers drafted him for which is outside linebacker.

While that may be the case, I can flat out tell you that it won’t matter where Chickillo lines up for the black and gold because he’s going to be coming regardless.

One of the first things Outside Linebackers Coach Joey Porter told the Steelers Nation Radio guys after the team drafted Chickillo was that his motor was hard to miss and was perhaps his greatest strength.

As a late round draft pick, that doesn’t mean a whole lot. Chickillo’s chances of making the 53-man roster are slim when you consider the youth already there and the fact that he’s learning a new position too. But… if there’s a guy to pull a surprise it just might be this young man.

Standing 6′ 3″ and weighing just under 270 lbs, no one is going to confuse Chickillo with first round pick Bud Dupree despite the similarities. What the Steelers see for Chickillo no doubt is a guy who can play the elephant position because he’s very difficult to move.

At Miami, Chickillo often started in a four-point stance. He won’t be asked to do too much of that by the Steelers, but his aggression and versatility offers them that possibility should he be in there for certain defensive alignments.

Chickillo will have things to work on to be sure, especially in terms of technique, but any time you find a guy who brings it every, single play like he does then anything is possible.
