Bullet Points from the Steelers’ 2017 Preseason Finale in Carolina

You’re just as likely as we are to want to get to the regular season right? So rather than drone on at will, let’s give you what you need in a more “reader’s digest” style.

-The Steelers defeated the Carolina Panthers this evening 17-14 on a score from Josh Dobbs with just :02 remaining. Dobbs would finish 16 of 23 for 212 yards and a touchdown to go along with his game-winning scamper. While we must consider the competition Dobbs faced tonight was quite weak, I think he has garnered enough respect from the coaches to be used in an emergency situation. I still think Landry Jones enters the season as the backup but the distance has closed.

-I think one of Mike Tomlin’s mistakes this preseason was not bringing in another punter alongside Jordan Berry. This has not been a good month for the Aussie who has been terribly inconsistent.

-Terrell Watson certainly made his case for a roster spot tonight. 19 carries for 89 yards is nothing to sneeze at. If nothing else Watson has earned a spot on the Practice Squad.

-I know it’s hard but you have to realize the Steelers are doing a lot of very “vanilla” things on D. That does not excuse the poor tackling and inability to get off blocks however.

-I’m not sure what more Mike Hilton can do to secure a roster spot. The nickel is a very important position because so much info is relayed through it but physically Hilton has been really good.

-Justin Hunter, to his credit, did not fade away as he has seemed to in recent years and had a strong finish to the preseason. He had a 58-yard TD reception this evening and may have solidified a roster spot.

-Always good to see James Harrison get a sack.

-If you’re keeping score at home, the Steelers finished the preseason at 3-1. Keep in mind the 0-16 Detroit Lions went 4-0 in that year’s preseason.

-Newly acquired tight end Vance McDonald spent some pregame time catching balls from Ben Roethlisberger.

-Safety Jordan Dangerfield left with what appeared to be an ankle injury.

-The Steelers’ D did have four interceptions on the evening and had a fumble recovery by L.J. Fort who has done more than enough to be on this roster.

-Very classy tribute to Dan Rooney done by the Panthers this evening.

-Cuts need to be done by Saturday afternoon. I expect we will see some starting tomorrow.

On to the regular season!
