Boyd Just Another Arm… For Now

by Steeldad

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed quarterback Tajh Boyd Friday. While speculation will be that he could come in to replace Landry Jones we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves just yet.

Boyd will be nothing more than a “camp arm” which means he’s coming in to take some reps and give the guys ahead of him a chance to catch their breath.

Where things could interesting is if Boyd really excels. In Landry Jones’ first year, he was outplayed in camp by John Parker Wilson but because he was a fourth round pick, Jones got the nod.

Last season, Jones wasn’t pushed as hard by rookie Brenden Kay but his play wasn’t very good overall either.

The Steelers and General Manager Kevin Colbert are desperate for Jones to take the number two spot. This would save them some money and would give further justification to his drafting.

Boyd will be given every opportunity to unseat Jones and even current backup Bruce Gradkowski.

The big question however is whether Boyd can push Jones enough to make the decision on a number three QB difficult.

Boyd has great mobility and a big arm but will need to put everything together this spring and summer to really have a shot. Jones has the added advantage of already knowing the offense but in his third year that might not matter any longer.

For now, Boyd is just another body in camp but given time, he could make things difficult for Jones.
