So when I heard that the door for the Week 10 showdown against the Browns hadn’t completely closed for him, I was flabbergasted.
The Steelers shouldn’t risk sending a still-battered Roethlisberger out to the field, no matter how crucial or non important this next game is, nor how well Ben claims he feels. He’s a competitor. He’ll do whatever it takes to get back to the field.
Imagine the uproar that would overtake the city if Ben were to get injured for a third time this season. This decision shouldn’t even be an issue.
Landry Jones has done decently enough to calm some nerves about Ben missing one more game. Since the bye week immediately follows afterwards, this would give him 2 weeks to fully heal and prepare himself.
The Steelers are teetering on a 5-4 record, which is good enough for the 6th seed wild card should the season end today. Losing one more game would be bad, but not devastating.
Ben being out for even more time would be catastrophic.
Even though the defense has been performimg exponentially better than last year, they still aren’t at the level to be completely carrying a team for an entire season yet.
That being said, they can pull together when drastic times call for drastic measures. Which is why sending in Landry with the help of this defense is a great idea.
The Browns still have a terrible offense, with almost no weapons on that side of the ball. The Steelers defense should be ready for a feast.
You can talk all about how they shouldn’t take any teams lightly, to which I wholeheartedly agree. However, this is still the Browns. This same squad is ranked dead last against the run, all the while having no identity at quarterback.
Johnny Manziel may or may never be the franchise quarterback Cleveland has been searching for, and I can pretty much guarentee they won’t be much closer to finding out after this game.
Ben sitting out for just one more week will greatly benefit Pittsburgh in the long run. Rushing him in too quickly will prove to be a fatal mistake.
The Steelers already have Kelvin Beachum, Le’veon Bell, and possibly Maurkice Pouncey out for the season. Pray Roethlisberger isn’t added to that list.
