A Long-Time Season Ticket Holder Chimes in on the ’15 Steelers

by Steeldad

I have been a Steelers season ticket holder for 17 years.  I have bore witness to some of the most horrific playoff losses we have played.  That being said, I am quite sure a majority of SteelerNation will strongly disagree with that I am about to say.  After the loss yesterday, and out of character, I stayed off social media to gather my thoughts and gain the palpation of the fan base.

24 hours later I am sickened about what I have read. Yes, lets politely clap our hands and say “good ol try” while we collect our participation trophies. In my life, I would have succeeded at nothing with that defeatist attitude. It is no wonder that our country is on a steady decline as the response to this loss is a microcosm of society.
Well, we were beat up, injuries, lack of personnel…these are reasons that we think our season ending on the note it did is satisfactory. That argument is specious and weathered. The Patriots suffered many debilitating injuries, yet they once again are one game away from the Super Bowl.
Apparently now, we measure against the inferior so we can raise our glasses high, instead of those that do things better. Yes, lets all give felicitations to Haley, the offensive god who scores points at will…Except when in counts in the playoffs.  Where was 14 all season? Sitting behind DHB who caught 1/2 balls a game? How about this staff actually coach up personnel for once. Develop a CB, is that not possible?
Mr. Haley…who is slicing the Denver D on the final meaningful drive for the Steelers with pass plays…Yet, in the most critical spot on the most critical drive of the season, gives it to a 4th string RB.
And let the apologists begin, who say, team loss, just like Mendy in the Super Bowl, wasn’t his fault. NEWS FLASH for those who point out Wheaton drops, missed Int’s etc. WHEN a play occurs in a game does carry more weight. The more time left=more time to overcome an error. At the point in the game, the Steelers were in a winning position. In a chess game, we only needed one move to put them in check.
I love this team. My weekly emotions determined by a win or loss.  We may be seeing the denouement of Ben Roethlisberger’s career, but, no worries, everyone get’s a pass in Steelerland.   It is no wonder we have a generation of children growing up who strive to be the median, because being unexceptional is now the touchstone exemplar.

You are right Craig the 2015 Steelers will not be remembered. As Steeler fans we start every season off with Superbowl aspirations. One of the reasons i enjoy this site is that you can still be a fan and be critical. Will the front office go out and screw some stuff up, will we continue to ignore the importance of having good DB’s, will we continue to run a rotation like a High school team, the answer to all those question is yes. But they are our Steelers and it does suck to be so close. Now for the next year stuff to come up but before we start i’d like to say one thing don’t expect anything to help out of the draft this team just doesn’t play rookies.
