SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Under 60” Edition

Good Tuesday Steelers’ Fans!

Our Ben Anderson tweeted out a very important piece of information yesterday about Steelers’ running back Le’Veon Bell. As you know, Bell is currently going to play the 2017 season on the ‘franchise tag.’ In most cases, teams work to get players like Bell under longer term deals and as Ben said, “The Steelers have under 60 days remaining to get Bell under a long-term deal.” If he doesn’t sign such a deal by July 15th then he plays under the tag and becomes a free agent in 2018. It will also spark a huge debate about whether Bell is in the Steelers’ long-term plans.

I’ve seen a lot of fans suggest that if the Steelers get home-field advantage then that is the key to beating the Patriots. Do I need to remind those fans that under Bill Belichick the Pats are 2-0 in Pittsburgh in AFC Title Games? Would being at home help? Of course, but until the Steelers prove they can beat Tom Brady when it matters, the location itself means nothing.

The Steelers are clearly prepared to go with Ross Cockrell at cornerback but do not be surprised if he isn’t the starter. They desperately want someone to who can play man and Cockrell just can’t do that.

Tweet of the Day… Big Ben needs to attend all home games from here on out. The Pens evened the series 1-1 with a 1-0 win last night over Ottawa.

There’s a lot of opinions on why free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick hasn’t signed with anyone yet. Do I think he’s being black-balled? To a degree, yes he is but what we have to remember is that choices have consequences. Kaepernick chose to take a stand for what he believes in and I would never dream of taking that right away from him. But he chose to do so in one of the more patriotic arenas in all of sport in the NFL. The bottom line in all of this is that he isn’t the same quarterback he once was either. He is still capable of doing some good things but his case should serve as a warning to other players who use the NFL’s platform to project an agenda. You may have the right, but the fans have the right to disagree too.

Based on what the Steelers did in this past draft in terms of high-character players… I’d say that closes the door on any chances Kaepernick ever plays for Pittsburgh.
