Did Ben Roethlisberger’s Price Tag Just Go Up?

Ben Roethlisberger could play this weekEarlier today, reports came out of San Francisco that 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and his agent are seeking a new contract that would be pay the young signal-caller between $18-19 million per season.

Granted, Kaepernick has been very good the last two seasons leading his team to a Super Bowl and to the NFC Conference Championship Game but isn’t that a bit much?

He still has a year remaining on his current deal but I’m sure he and the 49ers would like to get a new deal in place so that he doesn’t hit the free agent market in 2015.

I have to believe Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is smiling just a little wider today upon hearing this latest news. With two years left on his current deal, it has been discussed at length by many of us that the Steelers need to re-do Roethlisberger’s contract sooner rather than later in order to help their cap situation and make sure he retires a Pittsburgh Steeler.

The longer the two-time Super Bowl Champion goes without a new deal, the more fans will begin to wonder if Art Rooney II and Kevin Colbert’s recent comments about Roethlisberger staying in Pittsburgh are in fact true.

I have no doubt that Roethlisberger will do everything he can to make sure a new contract doesn’t keep the Steelers from being able to sign or retain top talent but let’s also remember he is far more deserving of a monster contract than Colin Kaepernick is.

Too often, people are quick to blame the quarterbacks for these high salaries but that’s not fair. If this is what the going price is then so be it. Roethlisberger doesn’t control that and he shouldn’t be penalized for it. Hate the system if you’d like but don’t hate the players who are taking advantage of it.

Regardless, Ben Roethlisberger’s agent Ryan Tollner likely started to increase the numbers he’d been planning to offer to the Steelers and who could blame him?
